PRED8R Report post Posted March 31, 2009 I am trying to set up my Remington model 700 7 mag. as a 500+ yd. gun. Does anyone have any ideas on store bought ammo that will be the best for long range effectiveness on elk? I will be having custom turrets made for the gun but have yet to find "the" bullet. I have not tried that many different loads in this gun yet, but I can tell you that Winchester ballistic silver tips are all over the place! So far the two bullets that I am toying with are the Federal 160 Gr. Nossler accubond or the Hornady 154Gr. Inter-bond. Waddayathink?
Benbrown Report post Posted March 31, 2009 You might try a box of Federal Premiums with the 110 grain TSX: they move out at 3,500 fps and should shoot fairly flat out to 500, although they will be more affected by wind drift than a heavier bullet. I don't shoot factory loads, so I am not an expert on what all is available, but the newer tipped TSXs have significantly better ballistic coefficients than the plain TSX. I imagine that Federal will be loading them soon if they are not already doing so.
Hunterdan Report post Posted March 31, 2009 I am trying to set up my Remington model 700 7 mag. I have the same Gun. I have been shooting the Federal Premium 150 grain Ballistic tips for several years and know others that do also. It is a super accurate load out of that gun. I have taken Bear, Elk, Deer as well as my kids have with this load.

I've taken game up to the size of eland and moose and as small as javelinas and a 10-pound grysbok with my 7 Rem Mag, but would never consider it a 500-yard rifle for elk -- especially with 110 grain bullets. I use 140-grain and 175-grain Nosler Partition handloads, depending upon the size of the animal I'm hunting. Bill Quimby
TAM Report post Posted March 31, 2009 There are exceptions to every rule, but if you truly want an accurate 500+ yard rifle then you should really think about getting set up to hand load your own ammo. It can make all the difference in the world.
Red Rabbit Report post Posted March 31, 2009 I can tell you that Winchester ballistic silver tips are all over the place! Have you double checked the scope base and ring screws? Does it group sub MOA with other loads? So far the two bullets that I am toying with are the Federal 160 Gr. Nossler accubond or the Hornady 154Gr. Inter-bond. The Accubond would be my choice if it shot well, or the 160 Trophy Bonded Tip, or 160 TSX. If you try the Barnes TSX, be sure to clean the barrel well with a copper solvent before and after, and fire a few foulers. I suspect your shot at an elk will be less than 250 yards. If you don't get a sub MOA factory load, handloading like TAM said would be the way to go for LR accuracy. May have to have your trigger adjusted, action bedded and/or crown redone depending on how your Rem 700 shoots now.
PRED8R Report post Posted April 1, 2009 I don't know why this gun doesn't like those Winchester rounds, but I have heard about them not shooting well in this particular gun! I definately don't have time to get into the whole reloading thing, I would love to, but usually when I get into something like that I tend to go over the top, so I am trying to limit myself to store bought ammo. I have already done the trigger and other than installing a new bi-pod that's the only modification that is going to happen. As far as shooting 250 yards, I can tell you for sure the elk I'll be shooting at will definately be farther out than that. RR have you ever shot the Trophy Bonded Federal 160 gr. in 7mm? Hunterdan Thanks for the info, I sure wish they made that bullet in a 160 Gr. Bill good to hear from you, how is Greer, did you get drawn for elk! Benbrown do you really shoot 110 Gr. bullets at elk? youngbuck Report post Posted April 1, 2009 Ive had great luck with accubonds in 7mm caliber. Both the 140's and 160's. I load 140s for my dads 7mag, shoots great, he doesnt need 160s cuz i shoot 180 outa my 300RUM for really long range stuff. I also know 2 guys who use 160s. One in a STW the other in a 7 RUM. Both were used to take deer this year at long range like 500+. If i was shootin a 7mag at 500 for elk I would want the 160s. Flat shooting doesnt really matter with turrets. Consistancy does, so does wind drift. The original best of the west guys shot regualr 7 mags with a 168 vld if i remember right. Not too sure if thats what they still use or not. billrquimby Report post Posted April 1, 2009 "Bill good to hear from you, how is Greer, did you get drawn for elk!" Thanks for asking. We're still in Tucson and won't move back to God's Country until just before my turkey hunt starts May 1. No, I did not draw an elk tag. Don't need any more antlers so I applied for a cow permit, thinking it would be easier to draw. I am just not lucky at gambling, it seems. Exellent info, that 168 VLD seems like great contender with what little info I found on it last nite. Has anyone loaded/shot this round?

It will be good to see you both. Give us a call a day or two before you come up. We run up to Zuni or over to Gallup a lot and might not be home unless we know you're coming. My wife stalks Indian jewelry like you and I would a 380 bull. Bill Quimby
