Guide License

Recommended Posts

I am studying to take the exam to get my guide license. I was looking for any input from members that have taken the test in the past. Does anybody know of any places that have practice tests for this? Thanks for your input!

I don't know of any places that has any other info, your local Game and Fish dept office will have a study pack available for pick up. Basically it's just knowing some common sense scenarios when guiding, like can you carry a gun, I think one was can the hunter give you meat, can the hunter fill out the transportation part of his tag before he kills, something about baying an animal with dogs without the hunter being there. I focused on the title 17 laws in the regs, also basic other rules and regs. A few other questions I remember where they tried to trick you up a bit, like can you kill a javelina with a 22 magnum handgun, how many bighorn sheep can you kill in a lifetime in AZ. Study up and you'll be o.k.

No practice tests that I am aware of. Just know the regs really well and you'll do fine. Pay attention to things like "If you change address you have to notify G & F within ??? days" It's in the details.

Also, learn all the regs regarding mandatory check-ins or call-ins. Stuff like if you have to bring a bear kill in to a AGFD office to check it in, and if so, how soon after the kill do you have to do it. When do you have to report an archery deer kill, etc.

In addition make sure you get the page of info regarding requirements for reporting your guiding activities to AGFD and other issues specific to holding a guide license. There are some things in there that you won't know by common sense hunting knowledge.

Just make sure you do not get off on your choices. When i took it i got one number off somehow and failed the test very badly. The guy called me into the office and said i want to ask you a few questions and then i will give you your pass or fail. He started asking me questions that my son could answer right and he is only 8. They were all questions from the test, i could remember them as he asked. He sat there for a few seconds after asking me about ten questions from the test. He looked at me and said ok you passed the test. Then he showed me the test i took and said i was sure you had messed up when you said the safest direction to have your client point his gun while hiking would be at my back while hiking.

The test is not overly hard as i remember. They ask things like how do you tell between a male and female speed goat. From a distance that is. HAHA. Good luck on the test. I am sure you will do just fine.

what rounds you can and can't hunt with, more the can hunt range with that's listed in regs.

archery restrictions like minimum broad head cutting size & minimum draw weights.

but I agree that you'd want to be really sharp on the specific items a guide has to report on.

Ditto on the Bighorn sheep question, I can't believe I missed that one...Idiot

Answer all the questions you know right off the bat, if you have benn hunting here most of you life you will already have a 75% then go back and double check the one's you skipped.

Pay $300 on the way out. ;)

Do you have to pay first before you take the test or do you only have to pay if you pass the test?

You pay after you pass the test. Bring your hunting license as well. Stick to what was replied on this thread and you will do fine.

If you get your guide license is it valid until Dec. 31st 2009 or is it one year from issue date?

There is a separate page or two of regulations regarding guides and reporting requirements. Call AGFD and ask them to send it to you. They are not in the main hunting regulations book that goes out to the public. That's what I was refering to in my previous post.

I asked for a study packet and the change of address is not in there and neither is your info. From what I read about your info Amanda is that the hunter has to report the kill and the guide reports who he has guided through out the year.

As for your question DUG it is valid for the calendar year Jan to dec. Not from when you get it.

I have studied this packet about 4 hours out of the day every day for about a month and I am ready to fail this test :o Please pray for me I will need all the help I can get
