Looking for info/value

I was wondering if anyone who visits this sight might have any information on the value of this shotgun. From the pictures I can find on the internet it looks as though it may be a model 1878? I am not sure though. The only writing I can find is what is seen in the pictures below.

Exposed double hammers. Double triggers. Damascus(sp?) barrels. Seems to be in pretty good condition. Some surface rust and scratches/nick on stock. Also some pitting insside the barrels. All moving parts are tight with zero play.

It's a Colt Model 1878 shotgun. They are regarded as one of the better made American shotguns of the time, but could not compete with contemporary shotguns of similar or better quality from Europe that were more affordable. Schwing (2006) says that 22, 190 were manufactured between 1878 and 1889. Values in 2006 ranged from $1,250 for one in Very Good condition to $600 for a Good one and $400 for one in Fair condition.

 

Realistically, it's worth whatever a Colt collector will pay for it. It will make a great wall-hanger. If you want to shoot it, you should have it examined by a gunsmith who is familiar with Damascus barrels. If he/she says it is safe to shoot, confine yourself to the use of replica black powder cartrige loads.

Thank you very much for the information. Its amazing that this thing is over 100 years old! Everything is still so tight and well fit. May just have to hang it on the wall.
