Bear and Bones

Recommended Posts

Cool picture story of your trek through some steep and deep country. Did you come across any bear sign at all, or glass up any of the elk?

Doug

No fresh bear sign and as funny as it was, we only saw two elk the entire trip. Two antlerless, believed to be a cow and her calf.

BooBoo and Yogi haven't gotten out of bed yet from the winter.

This year we were pretty locked down with when we could do the trip otherwise we would have waited till the end of the season and then made the trek in hopes they'd be out by then. We had seen some sign from last year but nothing that was from this spring.

We've got a fall pack in trip in mind if we still have tags in our wallets and vacation time on the books.

Trail marker sign showing distance to either trail head or intersection of another trail.

The area we were in is not known for elk with big 3rds so the shed I have isn't something you see every day in that unit by any means. Made it pretty special.

I think the coolest thing was the two sheds Packer found. We seriously believe that they are from the same bull, one from this year and one from last year, looking at the 'fingerprint' at the bottom base. That was pretty neat to land both of them. One was along the trail with an easy spot but Packer glassed up the other one from a good distance away adding to the rare chance encounter to find two from the same bull. Something that just doesn't happen every day I guess. Lets just say it was meant to be.

Great story and pics-I think the best I've seen here! I think that this story and pics shows the true spirt of the hunt-that it's not all about taking an animal to make a successful hunt-better than any post I've seen. Thanks for sharing!

Awsome! Great pictures and story! The packing in trips look like the way to get it done and have a good time with buddies.

I think the best pic. is the one of cmc doing his best to look like a Playgirl model :P !

Is the fresh one on the right. I have never seen a bull's base get smaller the next year. It could be a relative.
