Chef Report post Posted Wednesday at 12:28 AM I have a friend who just inherited an 1873 chambered in .38-40. He is looking for ammunition and wonders if the current low-pressure cowboy loads will be safe to shoot out of it. Does anyone have any ammunition they are looking to sell? L Cazador Report post Posted Friday at 02:44 PM Any of the current ammo is safe to shoot. It's pretty low pressure so nothing that would damage an old rifle. Clean the bore and chamber well. Many of the older rifles have a build up of lead from shooting cast bullets. A high lead build up can result in high pressures that can damage the gun and result in some pretty poor shooting. Of course chamber pitting and bore pitting from rust can also result in poor performance. I would buy the necessary components and reload.
