So why was it built?

Money. Have you ever seen the movie the Barron of Arizona. It’s based on a true story

It was built as a canal system to generate electricity to build Roosevelt dam. Shut down in the 1950s after Roosevelt dam was complete in  52 or so.

That's interesting......    I always assumed the diversion dam was simply built to 'divert' the water into a canal and around the dam construction site so they could build it.  Never dawned on me that it would/could also generate needed electricity for the project.  (Of course, I have never done any historical reading of any kind on it, hence was ignorant on that fact....  Reading is good! lol)

One thing I DO know is that back in the early 80s we used to catch a s-ton of channel cats and some dang nice flatheads up and down the stretch of water below that thing! ;)

I didn't think they had electricity back then judging by the photos in the deli inside the Tonto basin market

Are the photos dated? I know Phoenix was electrified in the late 1880's. By the mid 1890's engine driven generators being built and used.

They want you to have a Tonto Pass but there are no trash bins or toilets at Bermuda Flat. No fish cleaning stations open that I've seen in years at Cholla or other main rec sites (please correct me if I'm wrong). I saw a lot of people not purchasing passes because of the circumstances.

Thats never been a main site, like Orange Peal or Horse pasture. But they gonna get your money's.
