Recommendation for MTN Lion Taxidermist?

Recommended Posts

I'm sure Clay at Mogollan taxidermy, he's a sponsor on here and does outstanding work.

Check with Clay, I know he recently had to stop taking new customers to catch up on lead times, but if you had done something with him before he was still taking animals.

Dan Lee in Dewey did a great job on mine. He would be my top pick for a full mount. For a rug I would look elsewhere, he charges more for a rug than a full mount.

I have checked with five other taxidermists, and most said no or were very reluctant to try. Three out of the five recommended a lady in AJ by the name of Christina Boggs.

You can see her work on Facebook. She has done some beautiful work on Bobcats.

Did you just get lucky and saw it or were you calling?

I was using a Fox-Pro E-Caller. I had started my morning making distress calls for coyotes with no luck and switched to Bobcats for a couple of hours with no luck.

Then, I switched to mountain lion calls. Fox-Pro has a call for lion in heat, and I thought I would give it a try. After about thirty minutes, this Tom made it to within 100 yards of my call and just hung up, pacing at the edge of this burned-out aspen patch. When he stopped, I lined up the shot and took it.

I am a prideful man, but I swallow my ego and tell you that I was just very lucky as I am very new to calling in any animal, let alone a mountain lion.

By the way, there is a proposal before AZGF to eliminate the use of hunting with hounds for lions and bears. This may soon be the only way anybody would get lucky and harvest a lion.

Let us know who you use, I'm curious. It very very tough to get a lions face right.

try Marc Plunkett in Camp Verde (Wildlife Safari Art 928-567-6890) if he still does domestic artwork. he did my life size and it turned out awesome!

Respectfully, as a man who has killed a cat on the smaller side, I would suggest a rug instead of a life size.

Agree...
