Family Shed trip.

Recommended Posts

Well I finally got a chance to load up the family and spend a few days out looking for some bone. We got to our camp spot late in the day so we got set up and enjoyed a nice night around the camp fire. We got up early the next morning and started looking around.

It was a little cool for my girls so we left the prowler in camp and trucked it most of the day making short walks where we thought we would have some luck. The first day came and went but the little ones were plenty happy with their first horn.

The next couple of days were kind of slow but still nice to be out with the family. And then yesterday right before we started back to load up we came upon these unique sheds. They are half velvet and half hard horned, underneath the velvet they feel quite solid. I've never seen this before and was wondering if anyone has?

Anyway it was a great trip and I can't wait to get back out there!

My only guess would be that he was injured before he finished growing and he never fully rubbed the rack off--or, maybe he was just an old bull who didn't have that drive any longer??

I have heard of VERY old bulls not rubbing their velvet off before.... I was shown a set of sheds that had about that much velvet on them and the guy knew the bull well. Said he was ancient and died shorty after shedding. Makes sense to me.

Tyson they are about what you would expect weight wise from a normal set of horns similar in size.

Coues Sniper I think you might be right on. What happened to the velvet on the set of sheds that you had seen? Did it dry up, rot, or stay the same?

Nice find and way cool!!

Never seen it on elk before, My uncle killed a nice three point coues in mid nov. a few years back. It was hard antlered with velvet still completly on it( but somewhat dried). This buck was a little under developed underneath. If you know what I mean. Thanks for sharing.

They weren't quite as "furry" as the set you found, but had about as much velvet left on percentage wise. It was dried and tough.
