I talked to a couple of outfitters. They were both telling all their clients with bonus points to turn their tags in.

Guess the antler outlook is bleak

A 350 bull to them is small.  A 350 bull to me is a trophy.  A 330 bull to me is amazing.  So yes. Guides stay home. Leave my small Bulls alone

By the numbers:

  •   24,584: The total number of hunt permit-tags issued.
  • 245,736: The total number of those who applied for hunts or bonus points.
  • 203,660: The total number of applications submitted.

I’ve heard this before but how much does it actually hurt their potential of what they’ll grow? I know it probably depends on a lot of factors but are you talking 10-20” or more on bad years?

It's probably proportional.

A 375 bull will only be 340 etc

It depends on when the lack of moisture is prevalent during their growing cycle.  It's my understanding that dry winters have an adverse effect on top antler growth.  In other words, their 4th/5th/6th points lack any length/mass.  On the other hand, if it's dry during spring/early summer, their fronts (brow tines & 3rds) are weak.

A dry winter/spring/summer scenario can negatively impact antler growth quite heavily.

This can easily result in a 20" to 40" deficit compared to antler growth in wetter years.

Wow, 20-40” would be pretty significant.. Although if I seen a 320 bull that could’ve been 350 I’d still be smiling from ear to ear 😂 thanks for the reply and good luck this year!

Can’t wait to see the posts on Facebook “he woulda been 350+ on a wet year”

I shot a 4x5 raghorn once that woulda been a 375 on a wet year.  The wet year would need to be about 6-7 years later as well.

They are still packing last year's head gear. How the heck can anyone predict what next year will bring.

I saw some yesterday that sprouted new growth.

With this very mild winter, I still think we could have some perfectly timed rains.
