Archery OTC Future?

Point restrictions would indeed keep the seasons open longer and lower success rates but what would the long term effects look like when you have a big 2x2 genetic and those bucks breeding does every year and they can not legally be shot?   I even have a mature set of spike with eye guards sheds from Yarnell years ago.   Still one of my favorite set of sheds but absolutely horrible genetics.

Who cares. It’s az desert genetics. There will be giants.

People do that now and shoot multiple deer so I don’t think that’s a relevant argument

That’s poaching. You know people who do? You turn them in?

If a person buries an animal to hide or not report to me is poaching, and all poachers should be shot in the face and then reported. Would like to see the draw to maybe help draw percentages in other areas. And get the none serious out of the woods during archery. They used to have 15000 over the counter hunters in the Bab before the draw. Californians on mopeds..

Many things could happen the way the law stands. Many things happened the way the law was. So idk why you’re talking about whatabout’isms. That’s my point.

what about poaching this and what about 2 point genetics that.

I think if there was quotas and point restrictions the season would go longer, that’s my opinion. Really don’t even care, it’s just good conversation. I’m with woody. Im going fishing

There’s a lot that goes into managing a wild herd in Arizona other that age class. First and foremost will always be condition of habitat (food and water). Genetics, predator and prey base, lag time, disease, ect. I think as sportsman a complete draw with mandatory and immediate  notification of an any big game kill regardless of weapon would help. Horn size has been proven to help be a successful tool from coast to coast and border to border in thousands of hunting ranches throughout the U.S.  But again they strive for the best habitat  control there populations of mature and immature animals harvested control predator populations. So with all that said there’s alot of details that go into managing a healthy herd  is there one answer No. but there are a lot of tools the department could be using that would help

I say make all archery draw but set it where if you draw a archery tag in pass 3-5 it doesn't take your bonus points. That way the number of people hunting is still controlled and they can keep a eye on numbers. Those that really want a archery tag will draw in rounds 1-2 and use their points

Don’t you loose your points if you draw in 3-5 pass as well?  I was under the impression that if you draw at anytime during the initial draw you loose your points?   If you draw during the leftover you do not?

Yes you lose your points in 3-5 normally but not all archery deer tags will get drawn because of that. That’s why I said make it draw where you won’t lose them in 3-5 pass for the extra deer archery tags. It’s better then the jinky left over draw they have for leftovers now😂

I do like the data that the G&F now gains from the OTC quota system. It seems a bit premature to make any decisions with only 3 years of data, especially given an influx of people in the field from COVID.

If they were to implement a draw, I think they should keep the current draw system using bonus points and implement an additional “general” draw system. This general draw would happen after the bonus point draw results are posted.

General draw could be unit specific tags or a region (i.e. multiple units, say Region 1). This would give G&F a lot more insight into number of hunters vs their current, low response OTC self survey, while still keeping opportunity for hunters.
