twigsnapper Report post Posted Thursday at 04:50 PM Anybody have a recommendation for a trailer mechanic/builder? I have a 20’ enclosed trailer that I am wanting to swap the 5,200lb axles for 7,000lb. I just don’t have the time or gumption to crawl under the trailer and do this myself. Prefer the northwest valley but I can haul it anywhere for the right mechanic. Currently has leaf springs, considering going to torsions and would like some real world advice on the swap. matt Report post Posted Thursday at 06:27 PM B and M bumpers and hitches did axles on my toyhauler. Might try them. They’re at Grand Ave/Maryland area.
Lucafu1 Report post Posted Thursday at 06:31 PM Not sure your reasoning but sometimes the hubs and outer components are swappable so you can reuse your hubs, brakes, bearings. But you would have to do some research on that and 7K axles might limit some things. Are your hubs 8 lug already? I can't remember if spring widths are different, that would require new brackets and welding. Torsions are just weld in. It's been a long time since I've swapped those so I could be forgetting something. It may not be worth it but that's up to you.

Edge Report post Posted Thursday at 06:47 PM When i did this swap on my horse trailer, I bought the axles from State Trailer in Peoria. Swing by and they'll measure your frame and give you a free quote. Took about a month to get the new axles in.

I think the spindle size is going to increase in dia.

weldor Report post Posted Friday at 02:47 PM Just a thought, will the frame hold up to the extra weight you want to load on it?

The trailer is right at 9,500lbs loaded. Just want heavier duty running gear, brakes, tires, wheels for dirt roads and such.
