Lion kill

Recommended Posts

Came across a mule deer doe this afternoon, fresh kill probably in the last 24 hrs, water is nearby too.  Best guess on how long before lion typically return. It’s in a nasty ravine with lots of cover.

Trying to readjust some plans the next few days….I’ve never hunted them before but have always bought a tag every year.

Thanks

He was probably watching you while you were at the carcass!  I once found a fresh lion kill and ran back to my house to grab a trail cam to place on it.   When I went back the next day the kill was moved about 30 yards and re buried.   I got home and checked the camera and that lion was on that deer moving it 20 minutes after I set the camera, probably watching me the whole time!    They will eat off them for a few days from what I’ve seen or till coyotes demolish it.

Thank you, I’m not the least bit familiar with their habits.  Was checking a few places for the javelina hunt next month

Most likely the lion is eating on it as we speak and probably going to drag if off again. I would sit on that ravine with rifle in hand ready.

Here’s the kill we found yesterday morn. Pulling a little of the brush back found the paunch was open and a little pulled out but all the meat was still there

Looks like it's been finished off. How far away has it been moved since yesterday?

And this is what was left this morning…

Were there any discernable tracks?

Probably too late for that kill site. I agree with the above post; looks like coyotes/birds got it maybe, but who knows maybe the lion made it's return trip before anything found it. The early kill site pic with the paunch open would be typical of the 1st day lion kills I've been part of checking. They like to go in right behind the last rib and eat the the organs up in the chest cavity first it seems. Very cool to find and check out. Hope you find one to post up on and get a lion. Good luck!

It was only moved about 10’ from where it was buried.  Couldn’t find any discernible tracks but assuming coyotes got to it.

Neat learning experience
