Coues 'n' Sheep Report post Posted March 6, 2009 Well it is time to buy boots for next season.... I wore out my Irish Setters after 2 seasons, but can't find the same boot again. I have had an itch to try something different from the normal/boring hunting boot.... The guys I hunted with in NWT swore by Scarpa's and the boys in AK have sent me stuff on LOWA. I figure if those brands are tough enough for them then they will work for me...... I trashed a pair of Irish Setters in 6 hunting days in NWT! The two boots that I have some interst in so far is the, Lowa Banff Backpacking Boot & the Scarpa Mustang GTX Backpacking Boot.... I really don't like to hunt in boots that don't allow me to feel the ground (like straping a 2x6 to the bottom of your foot), I am not sure if these type of boots are for me or not.... Does anyone have a pair and what are your thoughs??? I want tough and durable, water proof, COMFORT, and to feel the ground without getting stone bruised, all in one boot, not more than 200 gram of insulation, and not heavy, but heavy enough for the days where you pack out 80-120 lb packs of meat.... ... is that too much to ask for??? I really didn't want to take them back as they were the most comfortable, well built boot that I've bought. BUT...upon further inspection at home, when I would kneel down or walk up a steep grade the top of the boot would dig down onto the top of my foot. The metal rings for the laces happened to be right along the "crease" where the boot bends, these metal rings would bind up and dig down...definitely a bad thing. I really loved the way they felt and was dissappointed that they wouldn't work for me. Cabela's didn't have another pair in my size to see if it was just a problem with that pair. They are the most comfortable and well made boots I have worn. I will check mine when I get home today but I am certain that the rings are not digging into the foot at the crease as I would have noticed that for sure. I guess everyones foot is different and as you said that is why it is so important to test them before spending that kind of money. So I was gunna order them....... ... Then they asked if I wanted to save $30.00 on this purchase by getting the Amazon Rewards Card.... I thought....hmmm.... a no fee rewards card, save 30 bucks, I have a great credit score (mid/high 700's)... a No Brainer... Right??? WRONG!!! They then tell you that the credit card app must be reviewed... and they will get back with you in 2 weeks!!!! Please continue shopping!!!! Hold the phone Brother.... what about that $30 discount... no can do!! But we are happy to put another credit search on your credit report! I can't even get the dirty SOB's to stop the cedit card!!! You are more than welcome to close the account as soon as you get the cards in the mail, Sir... Not to mention that when you call Amazon.con on the phone to talk to someone they are some frickin' camel jocky that you can't understand!!! I will Never buy from Amazon.con, EVER!!! Speed Hunter I go thru about one pair of these a year or so but I'm tellin you they are by far the best boots I've ever worn. They're light as a pair of flip-flops, waterproof and the soles are like wearing rock climbing shoes, no joke! I wear them in the snow, sit stands in winter with them and my feet still stay fairly warm. You can literally run a 10k in these boots and swear you're wearing running shoes. For $99 bucks you CAN NOT beat them!!! I have gotten the rock pinch a time or two in them but oh well I walk like a bighorn sheep in these things so I got no complaints. Some people I've hunted/hiked with think they're fag shoes cause they zip up but I tell ya I'm not pullin weeds, sticks or dirt out of my socks at the end of the day either. And I don't EVER go thru shoelaces in them cause they're protected by the zip-em-up deal on the front. Can't got wrong with the Speed Hunters for a C note my friend...... cmc Report post Posted March 13, 2009 I too have been researching boots and trying on every pair I can find. So far my try on reviews.... Kenetrek - Tried on at the RMEF national banquet in Texas last week at a booth... very very nice and should have bought a pair at the show price. Somewhat stiff but not near as bad as the others below. Felt great for coues country, elk county and serious hiking. Cabelas Denali By Meindl - Stiff as a board in every part of the boot. I could barley walk in them even after 15min of walking around at the store and tieing them 4 or 5 differnt ways. I'm not sure I could live with them and fear the break in time isn't worth the cost savings against the Kenetreks as they had the same support but not near the pinch like listed before. Lowa Trekkers - Decent boot and could live with them but think the leather would wear out on top before I wore out the bottoms in the rough rocks we see here down south. Asolo TPS 535 - Rank right there with the Lowa boots but had a much better fit in the heal. For the steep country I like them over the Lowa. For more flat walking Lowa cost difference I'd give them a try. I'm going to try on the Danner 453 GTX next. I have Danner 452 GTX but like that the 453's are a bit more hefty. Price is reasonable but again I'm wanting to go to the next level myself in boots so not sure they'd meet the requirements I have in mind. good luck as I know from my experience it's not been an easy decision.
