Over The Counter Archery Tucson AZ

Recommended Posts

Good afternoon my fellow hunters and archers, I was wanting to get an opinion on where is best to hunt for OTC deer this coming opening day (December 13, 2024). I recently killed my first Elk in September in an awesome rut hunt and am now addicted with everything about archery . I have put in the work and am dialed in on shooting I'm just trying to decide what area would be best to shoot my first deer? size is not a factor for me I am after the meat not the rack.Thank you and hope you all have a great day .( I live in Vail and prefer not to travel too far north like white mountains or to far south).
Very respectfully

Sounds like you’re in the heart of late OTC deer. I used to live in Vail and hunted 10 minutes from the house. Im sure nowadays you’d have to go a little further due to the sprawl.

( NoTAGS) I am considering unit 33 where it borders saguaro national park off of redington or possibly more west over near 38m by the Tucson Mountains. Again not chasing anything huge but so far 33 has been quiet probably because of all the rifle hunts. I know those deer are probably pretty shook at this point.

Asking where to hunt on a forum is sort of a no no.  But like no tags said you are in a pretty good area overall.  You need to decide if you wanna chase muleys or coues.  I'd consider heading south off I-10 towards sonoita I think it's hwy 83.  Take any road off the highway that goes towards the foothills and start glassing.  Try to wait for one to bed and haul but above them and sneak down to them and try and get a shot off.  Expect to blow it multiple times before you connect. Don't get discouraged when you blow a stalk, it's normal.

When you say dialed can I assume your broadheads are grouping good at 160?

no , not even attempting to shoot at 160 yards ,are you ? if so ,that's amazing !

I am shooting 2 inch groups at 100 yards with broad heads, so I'd say that's pretty good . is there room for improvement absolutely, but I don't plan to take any shot over 100 yards. thanks

Is that bad to you? Some people group like that with a rifle!

I always wanted to hunt in the Tucson mountains. I did once and just felt weird. I was too worried about all the people in the area and didn't want any issues. I would like to try it again one day. Its a beautiful place.
