How much meat?

Ive done all my coues deer with a poverty hand grinder it’s a pain in the butt. rather have someone else do it. You guys must have nice equipment

my question is how much are you expecting to get back. You’re bringing in bone quarters that weigh 80lb and you’re expecting to get 80lbs back? Need more information

Basics are a 3rd bone and hide. A 3rd guts and a 3rd meat. Worked at a beef plant and a whole beef was 350 ish sale weight even the though a whole beef was 6-800 pounds on the rack.  Plus they were certified Angus and we were cutting Hereford and milk cows and whatever else was half dead from the auction. Wild game is the only healthy way. A cheap hundred dollar grinder will get you through half a dozen elk if you do small amounts at a time. Trying to do the whole burger run will get you about two elk before it burns up. Best bet is get the 1.5 horsepower grinder for 3-500 bucks if you are serious.

We got the grinder from harbor freight for like 50 bucks.  So far (since 2020) it's done 8 elk with no issues.

Totally agree on the horsepower on the burger. I burnt up 1 LEM grinder that has like thier smaller one. I stepped up to the 3/4 horse and been happy that it has not broke yet. I still feel that this 3/4 horse is to small. Problem is i think this 3/4 horse was like $500. So they are pricey! Tryphyhntr your insane for doing it buy hand lol, might as well consider that as workout. I tried and gave up after a few lbs!

Very similar to my experience with the one elk I've brought in to a butcher back in '17. Most of my <80 lbs I got back was burger as well. 

I did bring in a bison in this year. Carcass weight was 887 lbs and I had well over 400 lbs take home so seemed about right. Got blatantly ripped off on the price but whatever.

My daughters ended coming out to 5.00 a pound for processing.

I had the Cabela's 1hp it seemed like overkill honestly.  I figure the .75 is the sweet spot.  Lem has dual grind attachments for their #8, 12, 22 where it will do 2 grinds in one pass which is pretty cool.  LEM and MEAT both have holiday deals going on right now.  

I don't think harbor freight makes a grinder anymore.

Bone in or bone out processing? Males weight yield different 

Brother shot a fat cow elk.neck shot . Hang 4 quarters 280 pounds.

Boneless meat 165 b4 trimming. Every person trims different so could be 20 pounds to 40 pounds of wasted meat.

Let's say 140 usable. 

You pay for the bone at the processor fyi. Hanging weight includes bone.

I've put thousands of pounds thru my cabelas grinder with the 32 mm head. 

Desert mule deer.. average young buck skinned is gonna hang 120 if your lucky. Boneless ÷2 60 pounds of meat if it's all clean (never). Be lucky to get 35 pounds of processed meat. 150 fee is 430 a pound. Ish

I assume elk is 120 a pound? Do the math.

Are deer150 per or buy the pound anymore?

Out of the loop as I'll never pay to get someone else's or half my shoot back.

Save up and buy atleast a #22 neck grinder.  You will thank me later.  Huge difference in speed and ease of grinding vs. #12.

My Dad and I dropped off a couple mule deer bucks one time with a meat processor. Meat was in perfect condition. Took a few weeks. We got back less than our yield from javelina. Meat tasted terrible. Turned that place in for fraud. Investigation was a total joke. 

Have a good friend who worked for a good quality processor and he said because of time constraints you will always get more if you do it yourself. 

So be careful who you use and if possible do it yourself.

Made bone broth from a front quarter for my dog. It's the thickest most gelatinous gold I've ever given my dog. She loves it.
