The biggest problem you may have is weak glow plugs. Put some Power Service Diesel Fuel Treatment (White Bottle) in and you'll be fine. I add the Gray Bottle to every tank. You can get it at Walmart (cheapest) or any autoparts store. Lack of maintenance is a diesel engines biggest enemy. If your like me I take my truck far offroad so I try to carry a spare of everything and only buy OEM or the best of everything. I only drive it once a week or so since I have a company vehicle but it purrs like a kitten and has 326K on it. Good Luck on your hunt. Not hunting unfortunately. Just headed to the in laws for the weekend.

I used Power Service White Bottle or Stanadyne religiously. That said, I will be headed up north in my current diesel in the next couple weeks to get an Xmas tree and I am not super concerned. I will probably put some additive in lightly, but 20*f isn't that cold if you have fresh fuel that is winter blended. In the cold months they blend diesel for colder weather. It doesn't matter if it is Phoenix or Flagstaff, they all get the same fuel to my knowledge. I've worked in Iowa and the Dakotas in January several years ago. High never saw more than -20. Everyone left their trucks running 24-7.

One morning the block heater outlet had tripped though and I had to cold start my truck at like -15*f. It was the most horrible sounds for about 30 seconds. Set it to come on 2-3 hours before you plan to start it and you'll be fine. Use a 12 gauge extension cord. I have an older diesel and run Mobile 1 5W-40 year round.

I can count on two hands the number of days a year the daytime high stays below 0. I’ve maybe seen 5-10 days in the 36 years I’ve lived here where the daytime high stayed below -20. 2 1

Not sure where your at, but even in Sioux Falls working at the VA hospital one December I can guarantee it never saw 20 degrees. Maybe I was looking at wind chill or the real feel the weather apps have? I do know that Iowa was the coldest place I've ever been. We were starting up a water plant in Eagle Grove and we couldn't do anything because everything was froze solid. Inside the building was 10 degrees. We stayed in Fort Dodge and there was literally 20 trucks in the parking lot of the holiday inn running all night.

Anything from December to march makes me question my sanity for living in ND. That being said, anything from May to October made me question my sanity when I lived down here. Someday I’m gonna get smart enough to follow the ducks.
