PhxDT Report post Posted Tuesday at 07:20 PM That's about as random of a subject as I could make it, but here is the background. We have a group of 5 dads (myself included) that are doing monthly meetings on "man training" with our 5 sons, whereby we teach them some practical skill (electrical wiring, car maintenance, how to field dress an elk, overnight forest survival, etc). We also have a spiritual element to it, where we work on something like patience, kindness, self control, etc. All of the boys are high school sophomores and cityslickers. We'd love to find an opportunity to come out to a ranch and learn how to rope a calf, because that would be completely new and out of their element...which is the point. As men, we are routinely thrown into situations that are new and we need to find a way out. Its a great confidence builder! If there is anyone that has a ranch, we'd love to come out for a little demonstration and some practical work. Heck, if you have some chores around the ranch for the boys to do, even better! As a child of the 50's and the oldest of five kids it amazes me how many of todays urbanite kids can't even fix a flat on a bicycle. Mostly because their dads don't know either in todays throw away society. What you and your friends are doing gives me faith in tomorrows adults. knothead Report post Posted Wednesday at 11:11 AM My father was a horse trainer, and I grew up around horses and cattle. I showed horses and team roped when I was younger. The boys need to learn to swing a rope and ride a horse before they can rope from one. Everybody is different but my father would not let me rope from a horse until I could beat him on the ground. My recommendation would be to buy each kid a rope, a steer dummy and practice. If you do this, I could at least teach them how to swing a rope and catch a dummy consistently. Non-Typical Solutions Report post Posted Wednesday at 04:19 PM How far are you willing to travel................I don't rope but I know people in Snowflake area that home school and roping is part of their every morning routine............I know they would enjoy helping out. Winter is definitely looming so that schedule will probably change. What Knothead said for sure a great first step................. I love the idea of working with young men like this........they need it, many of us grew up working with our dad's on a farm or ranch or other skill related jobs................it just is a missing link in today's society.
