GMRS Radio Repeaters

Recommended Posts

Got some new GMRS radios and trying to learn how to use repeater towers for longer range use. I might as well be learning to speak Mandarin. I’m sure it’s easier if you’re tech savvy, I am not. Anyone have any advice or YouTube links that simplify it?

Get your GMRS radio license/ call sign first,  here's a link to get some info on how to obtain one https://www.azgmrs.org/get-a-gmrs-license/

https://www.azgmrs.org/ is a great group that will help you, small annual fee will get you access to repeaters. Lots of folks that will help you get programmed etc.  A lot of good info on this website to get you started.

Cody, you come help a new guy (me) find a buck in 22 right now and I’ll program your radios for you! Kidding (sort of).

Like the above person said, make sure you get your license first. Google “how to get GMRS license”

Once you have the license, use MyGMRS.com to find nearby repeaters.

What kind of radio did you get?

Man If I had time I sure would come out and help! I’m headed south right now to scout and find a campsite for my hunt in a few weeks. I picked up 2 Tidradio TD-H3….nothing fancy.

This is America. Program and talk. Spent the 80s running cb equipment on ham amplifiers and the feds never raided my house. Ham Nazis are the worst.

Ham guys are like die hard fly fisherman. Always complaining about needing a license when it's just a radio. Always complaining when a guy with a spinner bait is catching more fish than them. Take some Viagra and watch your Taylor Swift vidoes .

I have no problem doing that…I’m not the sit at home and listen for the radio guy. I just can’t figure out how to program the radio to extend the range.

Im in Queen Creek amd with my GMRS HT inside my office with a bunch of PCs, monitors, cabinets etc and i can hit Crown King 575 amd 600 repeaters really well.  I use aftermarket antennas and not the rubber duck they come with.

Chirp is easy and lots of GMRS repeaters are private/clubs.  Get on mygmrs.com and start searching and asking owners permission

Didnt get a chance to finish...i use this 1/4 wave antennna below, with a bnc connector. These are good for hitting repeaters.  Bnc allows a really easy way to take antennas on and off and hook them up to mag mounts on cars or in houses.

.  They also make a 5/8th wave in 455 mhz that is good for horizons/ flat lands.

Remember none of your conversations are private, even the so called privacy tones.   Someone is always listening.  If you hunt and use them near the border, govt loves to listen and even had conversations with them.
