6A Muzzleloader Hunt

Recommended Posts

Hey all

I have this hunt coming up in 2 weeks and wanted some advice.  Figuring out elk has never been my strength.  I have made several trips into the unit, including this last weekend.  The area I have been scouting in is the SE corner, off the 260 not far off the 87.  I saw elk and sign each time, not a bunch but something each trip.  This last weekend I saw zero new sign, zero elk.  I know some weather blew in Sunday after I left could that be part of it?  So do I stand my ground and start with the area I have been scouting, or could they have moved on and I need to start  fresh down the road.  I had this hunt many years ago and remember Stoneman Lake Road being overrun by people so I wasnt planning on being in that area.  I will be solo and prefer to be away from the other 300+ camps that will be there.  But I'm also pushing 60 and know better than to get further than I can get myself out of.  If anyone has any thoughts they want to share, or have been up that way recently I'm all ears.  PM me if you want.  Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I am helping a youth hunter and his father on their first bull hunt for this hunt as well. Gonna be up there from the night of the 15th to the 19th or 20th.

We plan on being mobile. We will initially try to hunt more open or transition areas but we are also prepared to hunt the pine too. Gonna go with the strategy of hunt where the elk are! I haven't scouted a whole lot though. Been worried about shooting practice for my December coues hunt!

Had this bull hunt a few years back, really fun hunt. With all the people you can expect the elk to be pushed around a bit, so might be worth sitting in the vicinity of water within travel corridors/draws etc and wait for something to walk by 9am to 4pm. I was up there a few weeks back on the coues hunt and there seemed to be ample water.
