azhuntnut Report post Posted October 19 After carrying a heavy rifle on a recent bear hunt, I started looking at some lightweight rifles. I was wondering if anybody owns one of these Savage rifles. Either chambered in 6.5 or 7 PRC. I noticed they shortened the barrels compared to their normal Ultralite. nighthawk Report post Posted October 19 I have a couple that I have put together and really like. My one is not proof barrel though just a sav 110 with mdt hnt26 and shilen 18” 6mm creedmoor. With the can on it I’m getting 2950 with 105 hybrid. I know this is not the prc your asking about but short barrel data the other is a 28nosler in the ultralight and it is snappy with how light it is Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

twigsnapper Report post Posted October 19 I have the 6.5prc in the Ultralight with the 24” proof barrel. Shoots right at 3,000 fps with can on it. Shoots great, has the adjustable LOP which I have shortened for my kids to shoot. My son has killed multiple animals with it and has tons of confidence shooting it. I’d already have the 7prc with the 22” barrel but I have a couple 7mm rifles and don’t need another. The 24” barrel with the can is a little bit of a pain to pack around in the hills but it’s worth it. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I considered the Ultralite with the 24 inch barrel and then put it in a chassis, but I plan on running a suppressor. I think the 20 inch barrel would work better for that situation. I have handled and shot the UL elite and handles very well and shoots as good as any of my ULs and if by far the the lightest thing I have shot. I jumped on the KLYM before I handled the UL Elite and might have done it differently had I waited but am liking that KLYM quite a bit. My opinion on the short barrel is essentially - If you go with the 7prc you are getting 7rem mag performance without having to carry 4-6" of extra barrel and weight. Pretty sure the animal won't know the difference and why carry the length and weight. Is it a few more clicks if shooting side by side - for sure but so what when you take 1/2 lb or more off that front end and don't have to unsling/unpack/walk like a U to go under mesquites..
