There was just an articale about the Texas Game and Fish allowing people to hunt pigs from helicopters because they are getting so bad there. I dont remember where I saw the articale though.

The guy that owns desert pheasant recreation has a hunting concession in Texas-give them a call or look them up at the ISE show at Cardinals stadium. They are always at the show doing bird dog training demos.

thanks, i forgot about them. i hunted those crazy pheasants once. i didnt know how they planted birds till dog pointed, handler shuffled feet and eventually punted the on conscious bird from the head spinning he had received a few moments earlier. funniest thing i have ever seen. he picked it up broke its neck and shoved it into my vest. CRAZY. that counted as one of my birds.

since i dont remember name of place i better clrify, COOLIDGE

bowhunter4life told me about that. problem is i dont have a helicopter. it seems like im always getting conflicting reports on texas. i guess i need someone to tell me they've hunted a ranch half dozen times and it is always awesome. and if hogs are eating texas how come we have to pay so much to hunt them???

I've hunted them in Shackleford county a couple of times, including this year killing a couple on each trip.

However, the ranch I've hunted (friend's family) has been working pretty hard to trap/kill all of the hogs they see and it showed this year as we didn't see nearly as many pigs as usual.

It is neat country however, lots of rolling grassy/mesquite hills with big free range ranches that are loaded with deer, turkeys, predators and pigs. It's TX so the folks will want to corn the roads or hunt over feeders, but the country lends itself well to spot and stalk.

You might want to google shackleford county hog hunting and see what comes up. It's not as thick or dense as S. or north TX. The country reminds me a lot of southern AZ.

Have fun!

I'm going to hunt this ranch April 4-5 in California at Big Canyon Ranch. I've never been there, but know some guys out in Superior that hunted it a year or two ago & said it was a good time. One guy shot a 300+ lb. boar there. The price is $350 for a ferral hog, $450 for a Russian. From what I understand, it is located east of LA in the Riverside area, so smells like about a five hour drive from Phoenix. A bit closer than Texas is. You can also check out theTejon Ranch in Ca. It's about the same price range, but is much, much larger (100,000+ acres).

matty281. your going to love them hogs, we have been there a few times. those russians are a blast, they remind me of Javalina on storiods  fwi, if you wound one have a gun back up. we were there a few years back and a person had to be taken to the hospital due to being attacked! after he wounded one.. maybe hoghntr could tell us how tough his was ;)

myself and bowhunter4life went to Riverside for my bachelor party. had some good boars. i emptied my quiver, i shot straight into boars side armor. half day spent shooting, tracking, and evading really mean wounded boar. Chuck the owner brought dog in that saved my but. boar charged Chuck even on quad. i started feeling like 45 on side for back up wasnt adequate. boar wanted to rip me up. morral of storie is i am ready to go again. ferrels not really wild there. one of our friends smacked pig on but while it was mating while i videoed. exotics also not very challenging, but good experience. i might go next week during week so its private.

I don't expect it to be challenging like hunting coues or desert mulies. I'm looking at it as a practice session for the fall hunts & of course it'll be fun to bring some bacon home.

not sure of taste?? we packed a whole lot of meat into ice chest and i think some did not cool off enough. it is good practice. russians can be tough. they have huge armor plate you need to shoot quartering away, (archery???) slide arrow behind plate. picture where arrow coming out not going in. last trip was funny. just bowhunter4life and i. after i shot russian i took a black hawaiin sheep shot him butting heads with other ram. had to track at night. found alive, things immedietly went south. i decided to shoot with pistol. 4life held flashlight. leaning off side of steep hill shot and missedcouple times3rd time hit and it charged. i put gun right against him as he passed and squeezed off. sheep was gonna head butt bowhunter4life. i week before my wedding, lucky i didnt end up crippled on that hunt. are you going on weekend?? better during week not socrowded. how many people going?? mm

I'm going on the weekend. Can't get away from work during the week, as I just returned from a 2 week vacation. 4/4 & 4/5. I've got a buddy in Ca that is supposed to tag along to watch & possible film, but I'm the only shooter on this trip, archery.

I will talk to my cousin he has a small place in camp wood on the river. Has a ton of pigs last time I was up there I shot 4 in 1 hour. He also has Axis deer on his place. The only catch is because his place is small you have to hunt out of a blind. I will see if he would extend a welcome to a member. Prolly wont charge much if at all.
