Getting excited for dove

Recommended Posts

With my work schedule  I usually  don't  get the time to hunt dove . This year's different  I'm off for the first time in a long while.  I'm getting  excited  to get after  some birds . Went to a few normal  spots and surprisingly  there's  no water . Can't  hunt the cattle farms off the 202 anymore.  My buddy  checked  out 3 more spots  and had gates closed  or no water. He did  find us a spot . It's been  a long time since  I've hunted birds is this the new normal? I'm talking  a sxs 12 and my new 20gauge beretta  just outa the box and cleaned.

we were out around globe sitting water and could have tagged out in 30 min or less easy. They came in later than I expected like 9ish. almost none before that. Interestingly not a single Eurasian.

I'm looking forward to the dog getting back to work. That's the only reason I shoot doves or pigeons is to get the dogs some exercise and some work and some food! It's fun don't get me wrong but with the price of shells nowadays.....

Seeing a lot more birds than last year...haven't been out to check water or gates yet but I'd be surprised to see any dry tanks around me. Unfortunately locked gates never surprise me anymore.

Opener on Sunday is different...I usually count on fewer folks being out at first light when it's on a weekday. :)

It's crazy ! Last time I bought  20 gauge shells  I got a flat and gave them to the kids to hunt with  . I forgot  how expensive  they've  gotten  . Wal-Mart  was 40 bucks a hundred  . Use to be like 15 bucks.

Out for birds with  Gilbert and David Wiley.

Good  fun  lots of missed  shots ! Came home with  6 birds outa a whole Lotta shooting!! I brought  my sxs shotgun  I'd never shot and the new Beretta  . Felt like Elmer Fudd with the sxs but hit 4 birds  with it . It was hot 🔥  and was lots of walking  .I did get over heated ( bring lots of water ) . A few stops  on the way out and thankfully  a ride from  the rancher as I was definitely  in a bad spot way dehydrated  and running  the risk of passing  out .

Make sure you have way more water than you think  you need 5 bottles  was not enough.
