SANDHILL CRANE HUNTING IN 30A AND 29

Recommended Posts

Hey CWT I have been putting in for Sandhill crane for like 7 years. I never thought I would get a tag but this year I did. I have no idea where to go or where to start. I'm looking forward for some ribeye from the sky but I have no idea where to start. Any help would be great., thanks guys. Thanks, Michael.

Do yourself a favor and hire a guide (Google it).  It takes land access, a good blind, decoys, calls, and knowledge of where the birds are (Whitewater Draw) and where they will be.

I hired a guide the day credit cards were hit. I live really close to the area but the money for the guide is worth it to me.

We are no experts, shot a few as first timers a few years ago just sitting public lands having no clue what we were doing.

the next year we drew again, bought a few decoys and found a cool farmer that lets us set up in his field. We all shot limits. We didn’t use a blind, just hid ourselves a bit with some grass and sat still. The guide setups we saw were impressive and I’m sure they have really high success, but it’s definitely a very doable diy hunt. It’s a ton of fun, we drew tags this year after striking out a couple years

You might be a day late and a dollar short. I think most of the guides get booked up almost instantly.

Also, if you don’t really want to hire a guide or go knock on doors, the big dairy farm down there has a program where you can sign up and they’ll let you hunt on their land. We haven’t done it, and not exactly sure about the details, but it’s a pretty decent opportunity to find a pretty easy spot to start

Most of the time, all clients fill the first day and other days will be open ... take cash for that magic third day!

I have never hired a guide "yet", but if you go down and find out where they are flying at a few days before the hunt you can shoot them as the come in.

Start now in talking to the Farmers down there. Stress on picking up after yourself, be polite and the farmers are pretty nice.

Decoys are almost a must but it can be done with out them.

Just my 2 cents

If you are looking at going the guide route. Get ahold of Nash with Hi Lo Outfitters, best in the business.  Many here can vouge for him and have used him.
