A foam pad will take any cot to the next level. I split an old 4” memory foam mattress down the middle and I use that as a topper.

AZbowhntr Report post Posted August 1 Learned the hard way that a good foam pad is a must on a cot if it is cold. Chef and I were scouting up in the Kaibab years ago and decided to just throw our cots up and sleep under the stars. At about 4 in the morning Hector whispers asking if I was awake. I instantly answered that I was because we both froze that night. The bottom of our sleeping bags were compressed against the cot and the cold air underneath us went right through our bags. Still the coldest and longest night I have ever had out camping.

muley224 Report post Posted August 1 Since 92 have used outfitter tents. Place them face to face when 4 or more guys. 1 for sleeping and the other for the kitchen. Lost one of them on last years Elk hunt. Wind destroyed it. lasted 31 years.
elkaholic Report post Posted August 1 Bed of truck for 30+ yrs..still do depending on hunt. 10x10 Coleman for 10 yrs. Teepee tent last 10 or so. Never s fire , no beer on most hunts.⁹ Picked up a 10x10 cabelas outfitters xwt. Probably sell it. To much for a few days. May try Alaskan guide #6 , always seems to get windy and small 2- 3 pole tents suck. New insta- pop tents might work but not in colder weather. Anyone got experience with either 10x10.

pwrguy Report post Posted August 2 I have used a canvas 10 X 12 tent for most of my life. Love it but I need to talk someone else into setting it up :). It kicked my butt a couple of years ago and I think I am over that kind of camping after bypass surgery last year. Anyone want to buy a 30 year old tent? 😀

Siwash Report post Posted August 2 Quick hunts or helping out for a night or two I sleep in the back of a truck with the camp series 2" Therma-Rest, light weather/2-4 days I use the smaller Kodiak 8.5x6 on a cot with a Therma-Rest, extended hunts or more serious weather I pull out the Kodiak 10x10. Lag bolts with a cordless impact wrench seriously improved my setup/take down time and happiness with the Kodiak on hard ground SoAZ hunts.

Hoss50 Report post Posted August 7 Depends where I am going. Small toy hauler if I can take my trailer is preferred. If we are hunting certain areas where you can get a trailer I use a tent. In the past I have done a tarp over the truck bed as a tent too.
