Oct. hunt in unit 6a

I noticed on the proposed '05-'06 hunt guidelines, that an October coues hunt is listed for unit 23, but not for 6a,b, 8, 21, 22, 24. Are the WM's for those units getting feedback to propose an October hunt in those units like you are? I interpret the dates of various meetings such that these hunts could be proposed and approved for this fall's hunts, even though they are not on the current hunt guideline; correct?

 

Another item I noticed is that 2% of the deer tags are to be for juniors. Seems kinda low to me. Has there been a proposal to increase this %? Considering that we should be trying to recruit new hunters, get the youth involved before they choose other activities, and bolster the hunting tradition, and youth hunts have drastically worse draw odds than regular hunts, it seems a shift of permits is in order.

I like the changes suggested for unit 6A. Arizona needs more hunting opportunity and this is a great way to do it. I like Doug's idea on splitting the rest of the northern Arizona units up as well.

I know that I would put in for an early October hunt for Whiteys in 6a.

Thanks for taking time on this board. Its great to hear from one of the profesionals in the field.

 

My only suggestion would be to seperate the whitetail season from the muledeer season. That way there are fewer hunters afield during each of the hunts.

I agree with bacula, I would like to see the October hunt split off from the mule deer hunt.

 

I am in favor of the October hunt for all of the northern units.

Thanks for all the great feedback. Sounds like an October hunt will have some support. I will do my part to push this forward to our Game Branch. There were some neat ideas brought forward. You guys should really become more active in the recommendation process. You can do that by submitting suggestions on the website and by attending the public meetings. There were only 6 people that attended the public meeting in Flagstaff. I find that pretty scary.

 

There were some questions on what other units are doing. I know that Unit 23 has submitted a proposal for an October hunt. I do not believe that there are any plans for other units as of yet.

 

I will attach a copy of these comments with my deer recommendation to Game Branch.

Dan, one more thing. Why not a November hunt rather than just Oct or Dec.?
