brent Report post Posted June 15 Hoping to get into some tuna on a 1.5 day trip with some freinds. We are looking at the "Jig Strike" 1.5 day in early July. It has a 12 person max. Has anyone fished on this boat before? It will be our first time out and want to make sure we pick a good one. Just trying to figure out if they catch fish. Will report back if we go. Thanks! PRDATR Report post Posted June 15 I have not heard of it or seen it mentioned on the So.Cal. Long Range Fishing FB Page. I would ask about it on there it is a very active page. The Tomahawk just came in with limits for 28 + crew on a 1.5 day. It's not a wide open bite as some boats are doing well, others not so well but there are quite a few in the 100-200 lb range. https://www.sportfishingreport.com/ is good to check too. tagsoup_ Report post Posted June 18 Good boat, just a bit on the smaller side for a 1.5 day. The Old Glory will start trips here soon of overnight and 1.5 day. We've tended to stick with the Grande for full day trips. June and July are a bit early for consistent tuna bite. August - October are typically best in our experience. As mentioned it’s a small boat and 4 of the bunks are in the bow and not the greatest. we caught our limit of tuna, they returned the rented poles for us. Was a good experience. we stopped booking with them because their head broke midway through the first day so by the end of the second things were pretty rough. PRDATR Report post Posted June 19 Plan to fish from sundown to first light. You will sleep during the day and to and from. Many boats will want you to bring your own bedding/pillow. Meals are usually sparse so bring plenty of snacks, high protein stuff like jerky, trailmix. Go to your doctor and get a prescription for the patch. Put it on 12 hrs before you go aboard, it will last 72 hours. Nothing worse than getting SS and not being capable of standing at the rail.
brent Report post Posted July 7 We ended up switching to the Aztec at the last minute. 1.5 day on July 1st. Made a few stops in the middle of the night and two tuna were caught on knife jigs. ~50lbs and 80lbs. Day bite was great and had our bft limit by 11am. Mostly fly lining sardines on light tackle ~ 25lb leaders. All these fish were in the 25-35lb range. The captain said we had enough time to make a run to San Clemente for “limits of calico bass a chance at yellowtail, and then fish for white sea bass after dark until midnight”. We got there around 5pm and parked next to some kelp. Around a dozen calico were quickly caught. Instead of moving, we continued to sit there until 9:30pm feeding our bait to sea lions. Then they packed up and headed for San Diego at idle speed to kill time. I’m not sure why they would take the time and expense to drive all the way to San Clemente and then not put any effort into catching fish. Overall I thought the captain and crew were good. I caught my 2 bft limit on my first trip out so no complaints! The sashimi has been amazing!
