Jimmer Negamanee Report post Posted January 31, 2009 This is my first trail cam and I'm still working out the kinks (wrong date on the pics, for example) but got some coyote pics last night. Next, I'll try the video function. Also, I found that Jason's Covert II (SG 550) review and all the comments thereto apply to the covert II. But without further ado, here are the pics:

Jimmer Negamanee Report post Posted January 31, 2009 Thanks for sharing the pics, looks like you are having success on your coyote pic quest. Did you put out some kind of attractant to get the coyote there? Amanda Yes, finally success with my coyote pic quest. And yes, I used an attractant. It’s a little concoction I call “coyote crack.” It consists of a mixture of saved grease from cooking various and sundry meats throughout the week and a not so secret ingredient, dog food. Warm up the grease, add the dog food and voila, coyote crack. The corridor where I run my digital trap line (of one trail cam) is pretty narrow. I figure there are about 25 yds of right of way to the east and west of the railroad tracks. But I thought I’d put something smelly and tasty in front of my cam to help my odds a little. Being in the city limits, people also walk their dogs there (it’s not far from a dog park.) So, I also got a pic of one English Pointer and a Rhodesian Ridgeback who also think coyote crack is quite nifty. Thanks for the trail cam, Amanda. I am having a blast! Guest jbell Report post Posted February 1, 2009 I was not sure where to put this. or if I should start a new thread??? anyway this is my first post so I put it here for now. I was a proud owner of this camera (Covert II) but I now have some doubts. I originaly purchased this camera to keep an eye on my back yard and try to deterimne how my dog was getting out of the fence. Well I watched to see just where the dog spent most of the time and so I placed the camera so it would be pointed in that direction but I also wanted to cover the rest of the fence. The area where my dog seems to stay most of the time is a little to the left of center of where the camera was pointing. I got over 200 pictures in 3 days and they were all empty. Yet if I walk straight out in front of the camera it will take my picture. I think this camera has a huge case of tunnel vision and will only take pictures if you are directly in front of the camera. Everyone had better check because this tells me that my credit card charge has been wasted on something that does not work very well.
AZP&Y Report post Posted February 1, 2009 so it would be pointed in that direction but I also wanted to cover the rest of the fence. jbell, I don't own the covert but have the wildview cameras. Some of the important factors that help these cameras are the height the camera is off the ground and also the way the camera is pointed towards the ground. Jimmer has his pointed toward the ground and the base of the tree in the background. He is basically covering that spot on the ground. It may be tougher to cover a span of 'fenceline' with the camera. Lots of it is also the direction of the sun , that can washout pictures in a hurry. Just some tips and suggestions. I think the infared on the covert is pretty neat and once you get the hang of it , can be a great trail camera. The wildviews are cheaper but mine use a flash. Which the bear that sees the flash go off, loves to come and rub up against the tree the camera is on and turns it So, I get side ways pictures... Jimmer- nice urban yote pics! Good Luck- AzP&Y
Guest jbell Report post Posted February 1, 2009 I have the camera mounted about 28 inches high and tilted a bit forward towards the ground. when I walk right in front of it it takes my picture every time. I have it about 25 feet from the fence. I just do not understand why it takes all those "empty" pictures??? I know my dog hangs out a little to the left of the center of where I aimed the camera. A couple pics had some birds in them so I can understand those. I have it strapped to the post on the corner of my deck which doesn't move at all. there are no bushes or grass in the way. Its like it goes off by itself or either my dog is tripping it but yet he isnt in the picture. I am about ready to just return this cam I think. I am dissapointed. CouesWhitetail Report post Posted February 1, 2009 Jbell, Sounds like you should definitely call Covert and tell them about your issues. These cameras have a great 1 year warranty, so if there is indeed something wrong with the camera it will be replaced free of charge. I certainly haven't had that problem with these cams and I have taken thousands of pics with them. I am not sure who you bought the cam from, but contact Joey at Covert and I am sure he can get any issues resolved. Amanda here are a few recent pics:
Guest jbell Report post Posted February 1, 2009 ok..... I decided to do somes test before I just plain gave up. first off, when I call my dog and get him to the center of the picture it takes his photo so he definitely set it off. I made sure the time was correct and the same as my watch and did some tests walking past the camera. I would start off to the far left where the dog hangs out and walk slowly past every couplw minutes. when I looked at the pictures I noticed that they did not have me in them but corresponded to the times on my watch?!?!?! It is like this camera is taking a picture when I am about 10-12 feet to the left of the edge of the photo... does this make any sense ? what good is this? I need a camera that takes a picture of what is setting it off.
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted February 1, 2009 Jbell, Your best bet is to contact Covert directly if you are having an issue with the camera. Amanda
Guest jbell Report post Posted February 1, 2009 Jbell, Your best bet is to contact Covert directly if you are having an issue with the camera. Amanda I found this site by doing a search. Well I have done another search and there is talk on some other forums about this same problem and there is a review place that has a bunch about it. I guess it is not just my camera that is doing this. It is going back to the dealer where it came from but other owners should do some checking around and see what many other users are saying, obviously what I discovered by accident is a real problem with more than just my camera. cramerhunts Report post Posted February 1, 2009 I agree with Amanda that you should contact Covert as I believe that there is a timing issue with the shutter and the motion sensor. Amanda great pictures....what's the story of the buck, he looks great and I think that's a blind in the background isn't it? Anyhow awesome buck. CouesWhitetail Report post Posted February 1, 2009 Jbell, I talked to Joey at DLC about the issue and he says please contact him to resolve the issue. He is very easy to deal with and I am sure would refund your money if that is what you wish. Since you didn't buy the camera from me, I can only suggest you contact the dealer you bought it from or DLC directly. The camera was designed with a sensor that has a field of view slightly wider than the camera (2.5 degrees on either side). This is a good thing in some situations (like if you put it on a trail with fast moving animals). It helps catch animals that are moving quickly. But of course it can be a problem if the animal happens to stand just outside of camera view. If you don't like that feature you can just put a little electrical tape over about a 1/8 of an inch of the sensor so that it matches exactly with the camera angle. Or set it to take a three shot burst and you can catch the animal as it steps into view. Joey says he has sold a thousand or more of these Covert 2 cameras and has only had 2 people complain with an issue like you described. Personally, I have taken thousands of pictures with this cam and had very few blank images and those blanks seem to have been triggered by moving grass and bushes in the wind. I always have mine set on "high" sensitivity so it doesn't take much movement to set it off. Seems like a very easy fix with the electrical tape if you don't like the extra sensitivity range, but I haven't seen any need to do that in my experience. Amanda P.S. The folks over at Chasing Game discussed this issue and posted a picture of the camera with this fix on it. http://www.chasingame.com/forum/viewtopic....=35&t=12252
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted February 1, 2009 Amanda great pictures....what's the story of the buck, he looks great and I think that's a blind in the background isn't it? Anyhow awesome buck. Phil That's one of the bucks I tried to get last week while hunting with Ward's outfitters. He is a very cool buck, isn't he? I will make a post eventually in another thread about all the great bucks I saw out there. When I sat that blind, I didn't see that buck, but I didn't sit it very long since I was really after some other bruisers.... Amanda
