Tres Report post Posted April 12 For you guys with bird dogs. what distance do you prefer your dogs to hunt at while in open country? Do you like your dogs to stay in close like under 100 yards? 100-300 yards? You ok with them ranging as further? I have dogs that stay in the 100-300 range but also dogs that can get 700 yards out and hold birds till I get there. just wondering what your preference is. Phil Carr Report post Posted April 19 I like my dogs to hunt no more than in a 200 yard arc from side to side. Never behind me, checking back from time to time. My dogs will hold birds until I get to them but I am not as fast as I once was and I don't enjoy racing to get to my dogs at further distances. i don't like dogs that hang out close and wont own one.

stanley Report post Posted April 19 I prefer under 100 for my Vizsla. Which isn't a problem because she's so clingy she never roams more than 75 yards out anyway.... LOL
yotebuster Report post Posted April 19 I don’t have much use for pointers as I’m in pheasant country, and like Casey, my pup stays within 15-25 yards.
Phil Carr Report post Posted April 21 Well the posting states pointing dogs range. Hunting with Flushing dogs is a whole different type of hunting.

Schmitty Report post Posted April 21 It depends. The ideal dog will run big (I don't much like them out beyond 1/2 mile) as long as they will hold and not push the covey. After the birds are broken up the dog really needs to SLOW down and work tighter when working singles. However, I've only had 1 dog out of 5 that truly figured it out and would slow down after the initial rise and really excelled at finding singles. I guess that's why you run them in braces so that each dog can compliment the other!

Chance gets out there, 500, 600 yards, but holds till I get there. So Im fine with that. He responds to a whistle immediatly, so Im confident with that. Kate stays 100 to 300 yards, and constantly checks back to me. Both dogs have gps collars and respond to recall immediatly. So , I think it works our perfect for me
