WFGinNM Report post Posted January 20, 2009 I went out today near the house to see if some local muley's might be hanging around to leave me their antlers. Saw some does, but did glass up an old elk set. Glassing for sheds is as close as I can get to glassing for Coues'. Here's the first picture. Closer... Here it is... I found the match up on the hill above the one I glassed. Here's the set with my puppy Boone. I wish they could be Coues' sheds but all I find here are Elk and Muley. --Bill
Mr. Jonathan Report post Posted January 20, 2009 That's awesome, I've never found an elk set yet- only singles so far. When do animals tend to drop in Arizona? I figured since they all rut so much later here that they'd be dropping later too.

Jimmer Negamanee Report post Posted January 22, 2009 Seriously!!! How in the HECK did you find those from that first picture!!!?????? Thats amazing! + 1 Great job glassing that up! Cool lookin' dog too. I can't wait to start looking for fresh drops. My faithful (but useless) shed dog can't either.
WFGinNM Report post Posted January 22, 2009 After trying to figure out how you folks find deer by looking for eyeballs and nostrils, finding sheds is the next best thing. Here is one that might be a bit easier. --Bill

I once found a matching rag-horn set on the last weekend in February but they were still attached to an elk and moving about 25 mph. Generally the bigger the antlers, the earlier they fall so I'm sure there may be big ones that drop in February, I've just not found them. As for coues, probably April/May. Not sure about mulies. But Grong, AZAntlerhead, SilentButDeadly, and many others on this site have forgotten more about shed hunting than I"ll ever know. Maybe they"ll chime in with their thoughts. To the extent anything they say conflicts with anything I say, go with what they say. I'll do the same. Good luck and have fun!
