MidLifeHntr Report post Posted January 12, 2009 This year was tough on my rifle deer hunt. So I have decided to give bow hunting a try. My buddy picked me up early Sunday and we headed out. Met another buddy who was camping out and hunting pigs/deer. We spent 45 minutes glassing in the cold sunrise. Spotted Mulies and whitetail does, no bucks. Total on the day we saw 18 deer, 4 bucks and no pigs. Moved to our second spot and spent some more time glassing, nothing. Then we moved to the 3rd spot on a high ridge over looking a vast valley. Twenty minutes later moved to a better vantage point. There he was standing in the middle of a dirt road. He was there for a good ten minutes then moved off of the road to the object of his attention. There was a doe milling around. The buck started rubbing a tree and snorting the gorund. We waited a good 15 minutes to make sure he wasn't moving out then Rom started his stalk down the backside of the mountain. During the stalk this buck crossed back over the road and 30 yards up a hill. Stood and then remembered what got his attention in the first place and made a bee-line for the doe. About that time Rom was sneaking over the last ridge. The buck must have thought it was another buck because he charged towards the ridge, then stopped. Just then Rom pops up and the 2 are looking at each other. Roms draws and the first arrow is low. The buck runs 10 yards and quarters towards my buddy. The second arrow hits its mark and the buck runs back up the hill 50 yards, beds down and then flops over. The hill explodes with 6-8 parting deer. Another with horns. On big deer down at 70 yards with a PSE X-Force. I watched the entire hunt through the binos. It was fantastic and gave me some idea on what to do on my first stalk.
