Any luck rattling lately

Recommended Posts

Any of yo guys had any luck rattling during this year's rut? It doesn't seem to be working like it did last year. I don't know know why. I sure have seen a lot of scrapes and rubs though. My uncle and I set up a treestand over an area hammered with rubs and scrapes in unit 29. He's gonna sit it this weekend.

I tried this year without success. I was listening to a Primos "How to Rattle" tape, and that good old boy Wil Primos said, "ifin them bucks don't come in after rattlin a while, you'all better move cus thar ain't any of them bucks round".

Monday evening I had a guy walk out the ridge near my stand he rattled his antler bag alot!

Nothing moved. He left and five minutes later some does came by. I know there has been 3 smaller bucks in the immediate area he was rattling in the 3 days prior.

But I can usually tell the difference between bags and real antlers. So I assume the deer can too.

Good luck

Dan

Creed,

I tried rattling, grunting, and the "Can". All without success. The sequence that I used was first a bleat with the Can, followed by a few minutes of silence. I would then combine the bleat with a grunt. Finally I would combine bleat, grunt, and rattling. I tried any time that I felt that I was in suitable area. Heck I tried it everywhere that I ventured. On one experience, I spotted a group of deer with a good buck. I made my way above their location. When I got within 100 yards, I began using the can hoping to entice the buck. I made my way down the canyon slowly and quietly, and closed to 50 yards of the tree that I had seen the buck bed. I bleated with the can again several times. No response. I never saw the deer during the stalk. It was 1.5 hours after the initial sighting occurred. I began doubting that the deer were still around . I lost patience and fumbled closer, at that moment , I heard the deer blow. I then heard them runnig away. they were there 50 yards away , but the brush was so thick, I didn't even catch a glimpse of them. Anyway I will keep trying this weekend . If I have success I will surely tell. If not, well....

Good Luck,

Mark

The weekend of the 15th I had pretty good luck rattling and also using the can made by primos. My buddy and my self spotted a group of mule deer does that had 2 bucks, one was a 4x3 and the other was a 3x0 (his left antler was broken off). The 4x3 ran the little buck off and he proceeded to head in our direction through a wash, at the time he was about 400 yards off when I lost sight of him. We were on a ridge about 30 yards up from the bottom of the wash. When the deer dropped into the thick wash I took my can and blatted 2 to 3 times. Within 5 minutes he appeared through the trees and proceeded to walk right up to us, he stoppped at about 50 yards and looked right at us. None of us wanted to tag a 3x0 so we decided to let him go.

My friend made a stalk on the 4x3 that was still on the ridge about 400 yards away I radioed him where he was last seen just over a ridge. The wind was not cooperating and the stalk failed, he got to with in 35 yards but no shot was available. When my friend decided to turn back around, he radioed me and said there was a big buck above me moving away. I gathered my stuff and moved up the hill only to see him moving away on the next ridge over, at about 450 yards. I got behind a big mesquite tree in the shadows and began to rattle, the big buck suddenly stopped and looked in my direction. I then noticed my friend coming up the ridge and told him to come over to me but keep low. We sat by tree and began to rattle aggressively, lo and behold here comes this buck, he is a big 3x3 and about 26"to 27" wide. The wind was blowing from our right to our left and if the buck continued on its course he would not be able to smell us. Suddenly the buck started to parallel the ridge he was on, he was trying to get down wind of us, he got to within 104 yards and stopped after ranging him. By now I thought for sure he would wind us but he stood there for another 10 minutes, apparently we were high enough above him that he could not detect us. The wind was beginning to blow harder he finally detected us and walked away. I contemplated on taking a shot but at that distance too many things could go wrong. It was the first time I did any rattling on a deer and got a positive response. I know the coues deer are more proned to come in to calls and rattles but this was a mature mule deer and from what I've been told they usually don't do that. It sure was a great experience.

I've had a good year calling and rattling for coues bucks. Managed to call-in a nice 3X4 and small basket racked 3x3. Both bucks were fairly young bucks. I used a grunt and the can on the 3x4, missed a 24 yd shot with my bow. Rattled in the other buck into easy gun range~ 80 yds.

When I first spotted either of the two bucks, it was obvious they were in search of does. I would sneek in, use the terrain to cover my approach and try to get within 100-150 yd. The closer the better, pullout the CAN and give it a whirl while keeping a close watch for his reaction to the call. A dead give-a-way if it fires him up would be he would start wagging/twitching his tail and dropping his head. It actually made me laugh when i looked threw the binos and saw his reaction. At one point as the 3x4 was approaching he had tongue hanging out and licking his chops, ;) Wish I had a video camera to capture the reaction, funny. Maybe next time.
