Wanted: pigeons

Recommended Posts

I watched a friend get me some birds with a milk crate and 1/4 inch wooden dowel and a fishing pole, spread some grain back off with the pole  with it tied to the dowel pin and when they walked under the crate he just pulled the dowel pin out and we had several birds in no time.

I'll probably do that in my backyard tomorrow to see if it works honestly. I did that as a kid one time

I have a contact if you are ever in northern Az. $3.50 per bird

Yes please pass it on.  I'm willing to make the drive. We'll, depending how far but I can also pass it to my trainer.

Come on man! Their rats with wings!

Agreed.

But look at coyotes, rabbits, squirrels, doves, javalina, ferrel pigs, etc. Seems everything is regulated in one way or another these days.

Not really interested in trapping solely because of density of birds near me. If there were a lot near me, I'd be all about it.

However I might try the milk crate and a stick.

I used to watch them hauled out of the rail yard by the truckload. They were attracted to grain on the ground from leaky rail cars. Guys would lay a net down about 50 yards long and when the ground was covered with birds they would fire the net with some kind of launchers that covered them probably 50 yards wide, then scoop them into cages and throw them on a flatbed semi. Never learned where they took them. Some sneaky and a casting net might get you a few bucks.  Water treatment plants are a good place to find them too because uuuuuh, well..... corn.

Sounds like the fellow I worked for in TX 15 years ago. Would literally haul 25000 live birds to shoots back east. Canons were home made mortar like tubes firing weights via12ga blanks. Could fire it 2-3 days in a row before the birds got keen.

I wonder if there are any trapping laws or permits involved with capturing pigeons?

Yes. At least in TX and I would imagine elsewhere. Cages had to be checked daily for food and water. All other birds besides Eurasian doves must be released unharmed.

When trapping, put a pigeon in the cage to start with. Bait with millet. Just needs a 1way door that opens in.

Better yet, call local pigeon removal companies, they'll sell them.

Do I look like a rat to you?

Took this picture this morning along the Canal just South of the Mesa Cemetery. I agree they are like flying rats, but this one is unique and unusual, like an albino rat.😁
