My December Hunt

Recommended Posts

Well this story starts when my best freind, Justin and I were scouting for our elk hunt. I got a text message that the results were up. With spotty service my friend tried and tried to get through. He and his dad had 6 bonus points each for deer. I had told him to put in for the Kaibab hunts first and then a December Whitetail hunt. We never could get through so we drove to where we could get service. Still busy. We then called a friend who was in the valley to look it up on the internet for us. My friend was extatic to hear he was drawn for a December Whitetail tag. I then took the phone and asked what I had drawn. SAME TAG! I only had 2 BP so I really dind't believe it untill I got home and look for myself. Well after a few scouting trips, me being out of town the first weekend of the hunt, and the storm that folowed early that week, we were off.

Saturday morning we glassed up a buck quite a ways off that looked like a shooter. We made our way closer to the buck to about 600 yards to get a good look at him. This was the first hunt of mine I actually could hunt for more than a 4 day stretch. I had plans for Xmas eve and day and that was it untill the 1st, no work and no school. This was my time to be picky. I looked the buck over for a few minutes and decided that was him. I was able to close the distance to 450 yards. I got set up in a less than ideal spot. I was laying downhill, prone shooting uphill. It really wasn't going to get any bettere for me. I squeezed the trigger. After the report, I heard yells of excitement as the buck had dropped in his tracks.

That afternoon we found a shooter buck for Justin. It took him a while to close the distance and to get set up.The buck walked straigt to him, to a distance of 400 yards and stopped in the biggest clump of brush within 300 yards of him on the hill side. We waited him out, and he never moved while it was still light. Well the next morning we were after him again glassing well before sunrise. I found the buck about 75 yards further up the hill moving away from us, chasing does. Justin closed the distance to 620 yards and settled in for the shot. After a perfect shoulder/heart shot, the buck was down. I was EXTREMELY impress by the bullet performance on this deer. The deer had a small entrance hole, and and exit was about the size of a nickle. After peeling the front quarters off i could see the channel it made. It was about 2 inches in diameter. I could see straight through to the other side. And the deer and absolutely had no major cape damage.

Justin's dad killed a 90+ buck the weekend prior, but I dont have pictures.

I will probably be adding more photos, when i get ahold of the other guys' pics. Their cameras definately take better photos.
