BigBfever Report post Posted December 22, 2008 had a 100+ in deer in my pins yesterday, but ethics got the best of me. darn buck wouldn't stop walking At this range I can stick 6 out of 10 arrows in a kill zone but I would have to go into a deep state of depression if that guy got away. So he gets another week or so to live till I can get back on him. with that being said I was wonder what is everybody's max distance to feel comfortable letting arrows fly? Red Rabbit Report post Posted December 22, 2008 With a 4 outa 10 chance of things going wrong, you did right. Heck, we apply for hunts with a 1% chance and hope, and get negative results. As has been said, ethics is doing the right thing when nobody is watching. RR
BowNut Report post Posted December 22, 2008 5 yards or 50 yards if the shot does not feel right don't shoot. Good call! As for my Max distance it depends on more then just the distance. But the further away the better the scenario needs to be. Closer the better thats why I bow hunt.
longshooter Report post Posted December 22, 2008 I lost a toad of a muley 2 years ago because I let a arrow fly at a quartering away deer. He was right at 60 yards and I thought I could put a arrow in his vitals and I hit him to far back. He was a solid 200"+ 4x4 with deep forks and was over 30" wide. You probaly did the riht thing
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted December 22, 2008 Nice job waiting on the shot. You asked about comfortable shooting distances....mine is about 40 yards. Amanda
Gr8 White Jr Report post Posted December 23, 2008 You did the right thing. The shot didn't feel right for a reason and you were right to pass on it. You'll get him next time! Good luck to you! -Tracy
Snapshot Report post Posted December 23, 2008 My max range is 60 yards, and that is only if conditions are right. You did right by letting him walk to hunt again another day!

Pretty bad decision considering your max effective range is about 6 yards
peckl1 Report post Posted December 23, 2008 I passed on a 60 yard shot today. He was a great 4x4. I would have had to try a shoot through some occotillo or wait for him to clear. I waited for him to clear and just as he did he turned. I grunted and wheezed but he would not stop and turn. I chased him all morning and could not get another chance. I know where he is hanging out and hopefully I get another chance. Lee
SilentButDeadly Report post Posted December 23, 2008 Buy some pulleys and a rope, string a buck target up on it, haul it around, find a wash or somewhere and string it across, get your kids to pull away on it. Taking a moving shot at an animal is possible with practice. Do they still do those shots at archery competitions? My father-in-law tells me about how he used to win (and kill) with those shots.
