GRONG Report post Posted January 22, 2005 One of the days last week that dad and I were out looking for lions, Dad found this 4x4 carp that had been killed by a small female lion. A couple days after she got it the coyotes found it and finished it off for her therefore ruining our chances of us getting her out of the gene pool. Maybe next time. BASS Report post Posted January 22, 2005 It looks like some Halloween prop. I wish I could learn to find neat stuff like that, but when ever I do it seems like Op. Game theif comes before I come back and snags them up.
elkhunter Report post Posted January 23, 2005 I wish i could do stuff like that on a daily basis...but it's all about how long you spend your days inthe field...you'll rarely come across objects like that if you head to the field for 4 or 5 hours. I wish i was not a student at NAU but a mountain man right now!
ultramag Report post Posted January 23, 2005 josh do you hunt with dogs?I have been going to spot and have seen lots of lion tracks.and deer kills.i been trying to find them and kill em .but no luck without dogs
GRONG Report post Posted January 24, 2005 Ultramag, yes we only use dogs. It beats spending a million hours behind the binos looking for them unless of course you looking for lions above the hot springs along the verde. LOL! Anyone who gets a lion w/o dogs and brags about it is a fool. They were only in the right place at the right time and "accidentally" saw and killed the lion. Using dogs is the only effective means at harvesting a cat. Actually watching the dogs work is most of the fun, a lot like bird hunting. Also, just cause you hunt anything with dogs be it bears or lions is never easy like some would lead others to believe. Boy, where did that come from?!?!?! Calm down antlerboy, get a grip! galiuro mountain man Report post Posted January 25, 2005 You can actually do pretty good calling them in. I have had lions into about 100 yards, then smell or see me. If I rifle hunted I could have easily got one of them, but I only archery hunt, so they need to get closer for me. I have only been out calling 3 times, and I am 2 for 3 on calling them in this year. I usually try to go the day after it rains or snows so any tracks I find will be fresh. A good place to look for lions is in canyon bottoms, saddles, and steep ridges. Pretty much any major deer movement areas. I have had the most luck in canyons so far. I will be going again next week, I will try to use a decoy and a treestand, so hopefully it will all come together. GMM
GRONG Report post Posted January 26, 2005 Jeff, I'll let Dad know you said hi. His email is dogman@commspeed.net if you're interested in dropping him a line. Desertbull, I hear ya buddy! Ultramag, check out my website it has all the info on there. Mike, so far we've only caught one and let it go, small female w/kittens. We've trailed several but they seem to always be one step ahead of us so far. dang those things cover the country. Anyone ever say lion hunting is easy can come along with us anytime. later on amigos!
Rembrant Report post Posted January 26, 2005 Josh, No doubt I'm a foolish man. But if I ever accidentally kill a lion...I'M BRAGGIN! Man it feels good to write a post that doesn't have, "Arizona Legislature" in it... er... uh... DOOOUUGHT! Mike
