TAM Report post Posted December 17, 2008 Thanks J, and glad to see you're back. I know you've been involved/following the rule changes and I'm just curious if you've got an opinion about sitting out a year after drawing a Q or HD tag? It's obvious that G&F is trying to level the playing field, but won't this change push some of the hunts that used to be "almost" Q or HD over the edge? As you kow I'm a NR so my vote doesn't count.... I'm ok with that, but I'm not sure this will have the results that G&F is hoping for either. Won't this create even more demand with the land owner tags? Higher demand means more $$$, more $$$ means more fighting??? If there are normally 5,000 applicants for a Q hunt on the Gila with 500 tags, next year there will only be roughly 4,500 applicants for 500 tags. Will 500 fewer applicants really make that much of a difference in the overall draw odds? I see it as very small advantage at the very best. I know in Utah they also have waiting periods for there limited entry hunts and I don't see them as being one bit helpful. Between waiting periods and bonus points it still takes 10+ years to get a Utah bull tag. I'm not sure I'm against any of these changes, but I'm not so sure they'll have much "real life" benefit either? I guess my hang up is that I'm not real big on the idea of forcing someone to sit out. I know, I know... there not being forced to sit out, they can apply for other hunts, but they are being forced out of the Q and HD hunts. I'd rather let everyone come to the party and at least get a chance to put there name in the hat. That's just my take on things. I guess time will tell how effective the changes really are. jamaro Report post Posted December 23, 2008 Thanks... Sorry about the delay:) I ran the numbers before the meeting and if you are eligible for the specific hunt type your odds go up marginally. In most cases it is about 1%... Yippeeee... and you are right, the demand for Land Owner tags is going to go up... As far as "real life" changes???? Other than me not having a chance to draw an archery Burro Mountain tag back to back there really isn't that much of a difference. I also will not be able to draw for a quality Elk tag during September so I will be going TO ARIZONA to see if I can hang a tag on a velvet coues deer. I might put in for a late season cow hunt in NM just for the meat but I am not going waste my time on a elk hunt in a crappy unit at a crappy time. I have been there and done that.. NO THANKS. So I guess Game and Fish will be getting less of my money this year. Personally, I think this is a wave of the hand to try to appease the masses, these changes aren't really going to increase anybodies odds at drawing a tag. It looks good on paper but that is it... TAM Report post Posted December 23, 2008 Sounds like NM G&F is using one of the AZ G&F smoke and mirrors tricks. Like you said "appease the masses" and throw logic to the curb. I've got a couple areas to check out in the next few months that may have some potential for your quest for a velvet buck. I'll be sure and keep you posted. Brush Buster Report post Posted December 24, 2008 The "no back to back quality tag deal" does not start until 2010-2011 season right? The way I read it is if we drew a quality tag in 2008-2009 we can still apply for a quality tag one more year (2009-2010)? I assume they are refering to a "licene year" April 1-Mar 31? So don't make your plans yet, you may draw those back to back tags yet • Anyone applying for a 2010 Q or HD elk license, may NOT have received a Q or HD public draw elk license in 2009. • Anyone applying for a 2010 Q or HD deer permit may NOT have received a Q or HD public draw deer permit in 2009. • Anyone applying for any pronghorn hunt in 2010, may NOT have drawn a public pronghorn license in 2009. Brush Buster Report post Posted December 24, 2008 I was going to hunt again today but, I caught the flu from my boys. Those lions will have to wait untill I feel better. Seams to be a healthy number of them around this year for sure. Later
jamaro Report post Posted December 29, 2008 After seeing the Cowboys get there butts handed to them(yeah baby) and see the Dolphins win there Division(Yeah baby) I dug out the proc and really started to look at it... I have a few questions that I need to ask the commission members... 1) Say that you drew a Q/HD tag for deer. That means you can't apply for one the next year or you will be forced to hunt the early season.... What happens if there are leftover Q/HD tags??? Can you get those??? If you did get or even apply for a Q/HD tag??? Does anybody have a list of all the leftover tags?? 2) For deer is this new Q/HD species specific? It looks like it currently is... Could I go Mule Deer Q/HD one year then Coues Q/HD the next? 3) Are they going to increase the number of S bowhunts? It looks like there aren't very many S elk bowhunts to choose from. I don't think 15 has any??? and All of the late season hunts are Q/HD, so it looks like you will be hunting the early season at least every other year.. TAM Report post Posted December 29, 2008 Jason isn't it also possible that some of the HD hunts could change between S and HD from year to year? It's my understanding that a hunt gets the "HD" designation if the ratio of applicants to number of tags is high. If this is the case then you would think that some of the hunts that just barley made it as a HD hunt could change to an S hunt if the number of applicants drops. Perhaps this will be rare but I think it's possible for a unit to be HD one year and S the next? It all depends on how many people apply for it... right? I'm also curious about the Q coues one year vs Q mule deer the next?
fatfootdoc Report post Posted December 29, 2008 Any late archery hunts that arent currently HD or Q will quickly become so ,If I had a q/hd tag one year and there was a S late hunt, guess which hunt I would put in for the next year. So would some others I imagine and that will change that S to a HD/Q pretty quick!!! ag
huntswnm Report post Posted January 9, 2009 OK, So far all this discussion has been in regards to draw odds, HQ/HD issues, NR/Resident portions, etc which definately all deserve the attention.........BUT has anyone noticed the EXTRA fee that has been thrown in this year? Like the habitat stamp and Access Validation fee werent enough....now we have to pay a GAIN fee. Hopefully I am reading it wrong, its on the last two pages of the regulations. From what I can tell there are areas all over the state that folks will have to pay $15/per person to use whether its hunting, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, photography, etc. Now we have mentioned on here before that hunters and fisherman have been the only ones required to purchase these "stamps" even though there is a wide range of people who use the same land we do, just in a different way. Now it seems that they have come up with a way that ALL people who use these areas have to pay the GAIN fee. BUT for those of us who hunt and fish this is in ADDITION to the fees we already pay, i.e. habitat stamp and Access Validation fee. My math shows that this year I will be paying out $24 to the NM G & F just to get into the "public" land before I purchase all my tags. Anyone else wondering when the fees are going to end??????? jamaro Report post Posted January 10, 2009 Jeff... I responded to you on another site and i am on the road but the intent of this was to make people that don't have a valid hunting or fishing license pay there fair share to be on lands that are owned by the Game and Fish... SO people like hikers, birdwatchers, bikers. etc.. would know need a GAIN stamp or whatever they are calling it to be on those properties.. J
