Rembrant Report post Posted January 20, 2005 In the Southeastern part of Arizona the various mountain ranges that rise from the desert floor are refered to as "Sky Islands". It is the steeper areas of these ranges that the Majestic Coues Deer calls his home. These higher elevations collect more precipitation that provides for more vegitation and better feed for this superior breed of deer; shrubs like Mountain Mohogany, and succulant forbs like Red Stemmed Fillery. Everything about this supurb animal is high class and better than its cousin, the lowly mule deer, which is content to slum around the parched lifeless bottom of the Sonoran Desert floor. These happless and lazy creatures don't bother to put the work into climbing up to the better food sources and are doomed forever as 'bottom feeders', or 'CARP". I hope this helps you understand. sczoner Report post Posted January 20, 2005 Well, I knew the Coues was a more elegant and finer species, but Rembrant and Lark have have both provided eloquent explanations. I learn something new everyday on this website
coues addict Report post Posted January 20, 2005 Rembrant That was the best explanation I have ever heard. Spoken like a true " Arteest". I should have said 127and 4/8'' and I could have won an awesome print ! Dang. Oh well maybe next time! Oh ya and scoozer they are also called Carp because they are not as tasty, like the lowly carp. later Coues Addict
CHD Report post Posted January 21, 2005 C'mon now boys. Everybody knows that the great Rocky Mtn Mule Deer is the only REAL western deer. This is substantiated by the fact that many easterners come west each fall to pursue a magnificent, big-racked muley with a big fat neck (not a pencil thin one). How many travel here from Pennsylvania to shoot a cows? Not many. With antlers reaching toward the sky and beams as big around as a baseball bat and tines longer than the height of the average cows deer and intelligence on par with Einstein, a mature Rocky Mtn Mule Deer buck is the epitome of western big game hunting. After all, how many magazine articles do ya see about Cows deer versus Mule Deer? Why do ya think Cows tags are soooooo easy to draw? How in the heck can a deer named after a filthy, stinkin' bovine be an elegant, finer, classy species??? Cows pee and sheet in the same water they drink, are dumber than a box of rocks, stink, and are good for nothin' but eatin', and some ain't even good for that. Why name a deer after 'em? How can a deer that grows a trophy rack that can be fit into a matchbox be the finest deer in the western mountains? They ain't even tall enough to look over the AZ grass in a drought year! I know I'm right 'cause you all apply for 13A/13B first choice every year, don't ya?

KGAINES Report post Posted January 21, 2005 I agree they are both great deer, but I like the coues better. I have never put in for any of the hunts north of the Colorado river, but my first coues hunt was my fifth choice, and now they are my first. I was in Minnesota and Wisconsin a few months ago and there were more deer dead on the roads than you usually see in a couple of days here, so I know what deer are stupid. Rembrant Report post Posted January 21, 2005 I really dig those muleys too! No, I don't put in for the N. Arizona muley hunts, Chris. That would be a good idea if the Dec whitetail hunts weren't so darn hard to get drawn for. It has come down to applying for Arizona whitetails and out-of-state muleys, for me. Seeing one of those big, blocky, tall/square-racked muley bucks out in sage country is one of those special things that really makes me happy to be alive to witness. It is pretty odd that the desert muleys tend to hang on the bottoms when the majority of Western muleys can be found nearly everywhere - from desert to tundra! I was just answering the, "What's 'CARP' mean?" question. You know, Chris, that you are confusing the natives with the "cows" pronunciation. 99% of all us Arizona boys call them little creatures "cooze" - in spite of Amanda's efforts to educate us. I go back and forth with it. I like to say it correctly, but when I do, everybody looks at me like I'm from Mars. It's kinda like the Mazatzal Mountains. Everybody says "Matazel". Or Salome Creek - if you don't say "Sally Mae" nobody knows what you are talking about. We're a funny bunch. Mike
wetmule Report post Posted January 22, 2005 Hafta agree with CHD, nothing in the world as pretty as a truly big monster toad muley buck. For me coues is second, and that ain't bad. If you got the money you can pretty much guarantee yourself a big elk, bear, ram, cat,East. WT, Pronghorn and even coues to some extent with some of the Mexico hunts that are out there. You can't buy a big Muley. You can draw the best areas for muleys - Kaibab, strip etc. and still your chances of taking a great buck are pretty poor. You can venture into any coues country or sky island mtn. range and find B&C bucks. I know lots and lots of people with monster B & C coues bucks on their walls, none of them have ever taken a big muley. Don't get me wrong I love everything about coues and hunting them they sure are fun to hunt, just not as tough to get a B & C class animal as it is for muleys.
