Hey guys I need some help deciding what type of .308 I should get I am really looking at the Remington Mod. 700 sps-v. Looks like a great rifle but maybe there is a better rifle out there for the same or around $550 price range. Please help.

Although I caution you that hunting or shooting advice from me is worth exactly what you pay for it, here are my $.02.

I have a Tikka T3 lite stainless in .308 and I really like it. It’s smooth. It’s more accurate than I am. And it is light. It is also in your price range.

Here is a pro review (if the link works):

Here’s a con review (Chuck Hawks HATED it):

To add to Red Rabbit’s suggestion, here’s a review of the Vanguard and the T3 (Basically, it says that what will work best for you is a matter of personal preference. No one can argue with that.):

I need a rifle that is good to go right out of the box. I would never tinker with a trigger and if I reloaded it would probably be dangerous. My Tikka can shoot MOA from a bench at the range with factory ammo which made me very happy. It did not, however, keep me from missing a spike at 300 yds this year when I was down south with 4Huntrs and Ajohunter.

Good luck on your quest. Let us know what you end up with.

Tikka, plain jane Remington 700, or Savage are good, quality products at a decent price. I especially like the Savage with Accu-trigger. They make a good base for a "custom" gun too should you want to tinker with it later on.

I have had great luck buying used guns at discounted prices and building up from there... The donor action for my .257 wby mag (rem 700 7mm mag, complete gun) was only $315 and it was in decent shape. That was the entire gun..

have to agree...I love my Savage .270 WSM. The accu trigger is awesome. I didnt care about weight too much, I dont hike all that far anymore (bad knee), and am big enough to pack the weight, so I didnt consider that too much. I can only speak from my experience, but definitely think you should look at all your options...

Good Luck, and let us know what you end up with.

I think Tikka's are great guns. I have 2. Don't forget about a good scope. Save money on the gun and put it towards a good, quality scope.

I have had several deer guns and now have a Tikka T3 in .270 which I like better than all the rest. It's light, well engineered, has a great trigger and shoots straight, but there are several more out there in the same price range, so get what looks and feels best to you. For what it's worth, the Leupold VXI with LRD reticle is a great scope for the price and Leupold's warranty can't be beat. Jack

I haven't had any experience with the Tikka, but the Savage and Weatherby are great shooters. I have 2 Wby Vanguards and for $400, they are hard to beat.

Just my $.02

I have a tikka t3 lite in 270wsm, personally I think it is the best looking rifle for that price range. I dont know what it is about the SPS im sure its accurate and just a deadly as the tikka but it just looks like a unpolished turd compared to the tikka and weatherby for that matter. Oh yeah and the detachable magazine is a huge plus.

Tikka or Vanguard. I have the Tikka T3 lite also in .243 for varmints. Have not shot it much yet but gonna try it on and hope to get an antelope tomorrow with it.

The action is smoother than any gun in the price range.

+1 on the Tikka T3 Lite. As the name suggests, it's light for packing around all day. It's very accurate out of the box, with factory ammo. After missing several bucks last year, I figured the problem HAD to be my old lever-action .308 Winchester (it couldn't have been my lack of time spent at the range). I bought a Tikka in .270 last year and topped it with a Nikon BDC scope. The set-up worked like a charm in October. Good luck with your decision.

Most places carry them. Any of the major stores (Cabelas, Bass Pro, or Sportsman's Wherehouse) will usually have them in a fairly large selection of calibers and configurations. Check their ads for because they also put them on sale fairly often. You may want to call ahead before you drive too far to make sure they have a lefty for you to hold. Good luck.
