Stinging and Biting Critters

Recommended Posts

I'm a park ranger in central Arizona. I'm "out" meaning in the desert mountains most days and have been since I was a boy growing up in Tucson in the 50's. I've seen rattlesnakes EVERY month of the year. This includes February in the Rincons with patches of snow on the ground!

Having said that; most rattlesnake enounters occur when temperatures are in the high 70's and above. In other words, rattlesnakes are most active in warmer weather. As I tell our winter vistors; rattlesnake activity is temperature not seasonally driven.

Keep in mind that most bites are to males between the ages of 16-30 who are on a substance (usually alcohol) and think that playing with snakes is a macho pastime.

So as mature, rationale beings, just exercise good judgment and enjoy your hunt!
