Arrow Speed

Recommended Posts

I am shooting a PSE firestorm lite. IBO is 300, but I am shooting about 285. If I add 28 grains to my arrow weight by moving to a stiffer spine, how much slower will I shoot?

You will probably lose around 8 fps. The advantage to that though is you will have more KE which is more important than speed.

Not sure exactly, but you could go to Archery Headquarters (or another shop) and shoot different arrows through the chrono (I think they will shoot your bow for you) this is what I did and determined my new arrow (which is a Easton FMJ 340 and I have been real happy). Getting about 280 FPS with a 100 grain tip from my X-Force. You may not get more KE put you will definitely have the ability to get penetration (but the whole KE/penetration gets very confusing).

Thanks.

My friend has a chrono, so I might just put a 125 gr. tip on my current arrow (gold tip xt 5575), and look at the difference. I shot my deer at 73 yards last year, and am still wanting to keep my capability out to that distance. At my speed the arrow is really dropping fast out at that range, so I need to try and figure out how much the down range performance will change.

So why is your X-Force shooting at 280 f/s? I thought those shot well into the 3's.

I have a 27 inch draw, shooting a 470 grain arrow (total), and have the 7 inch brace height. You should be fine with a 125 head (plus it will be nice not to have to purchase more arrows) check you FOC (I belive gold tip have a FOC calculator).

According to the calculator I am at 61.5 ft-lbs. My bow isn't that fast of a shooter, but this should be plenty of KE. Now I just have to find a way to get close enough for a shot (the hard part).

it only takes about 40 lbs of kentic energy to penatrate a deer if that on a coues, i'd go with a lighter arrow and keep your velocity, my buddy shot his deer last year with his x force with a total arrow weight of 350 grain/with tip(extremely light) and it blew threw both both shoulders, on an elk def. want more energy. but the faster that arrow gets there that less time the animal has to react, on the otherhand the light arrow will not fly as good in windy conditions, and the stability of the arrow as it leaves to bow can get a little wobbily, try to find that perfect medium of weight and velocity, With your set up (not knowing very much) a 285fps with a total arrow weight of 375-385 your KE should be from 70-80lbs, which will maximize you speed and have more then enought KE to slam your game. Darn is it Friday yet

The whitetail I shot in Aug. was at 73 yards, and the arrow went through him like he wasn't even there. I found it stuck in a prickly pear cactus right behind where he stood. There was so little blood on the arrow, I thought I had missed him, until I looked closer (passed just behind his vitals). He walked about 30 yards, then was done. I know I have plenty for deer, but I want enough energy so that I don't need to buy new arrows and re-sight in for every game animal I hunt. I am doing the same with my rifles. With the limited time I have, I would rather spend my time scouting than re-sighting in and hassling with getting set up for each hunt.

I agree 100% BigBfever, I would worry more about FOC and spine when selecting a broadhead weight than the actual broadhead weight itself. My total arrow weight is 352 grns. with a 75 gr. tip. spines out great on my setup. Arrow speed is 302 @ 28" draw 70 lbs. draw. Killed two bucks with this setup. One deer it hit both shoulders and stopped after just cutting the hide on the opposite side 52 yds away. The other was about 19-20 yds blew clean through quartering towards me. Entered just behind the front shoulder catching the rear on the lung and exiting on the opposite side rump. Basically diagonally throught the deer.

Why? Not stirring the pot, but that is a poor shot choice.

"Not stirring the pot" hmm... He was right in front of my face, I spend alot of time shooting my bow and knew I could make that shot. I took the BEST shot I could and I nailed it! If you don't like it, I don't care.

sounds like your set up is fine, if your shooting consistent i'd stick with it. If your blowing through shoulders that is enough to take down any AZ game

What is you arrow weight. minus the broadhead and what arrows are you shooting. you might be able to switch to another arrow that is stiffer and lighter and get better velocity without losing any KE.
