Shooting a 30-06... what is the best grain bullet for coues?

I will be using my 30-06 for my 6A December coues hunt and was curious as to what grain bullet you all would suggest?

 

I have been shooting 180 grain but I was concerened it might be to heavy. Any advice would be appreciated.

While 180 grain maybe a bit big for coues, I would say that what ever bullet you feel most comfortable with, especially at longer ranges, is the best. Many shots are over 200 or 300 yards. If you and your rifle shoot 180 gr the most accuratley then that is what i would use.

180gr is a bit over kill for Coues. However I always say that if you have been shooting those 180gr and you are comfortable with them than stay with them. The key is consistency and shot placement. I would say pick a bullet that you can use for all game and call it good. I don't like changing bullet weights for different game. Just my 2 cents.

150 gr. Zero it at 200 meters or 225 yards. Then practice and practice more. Aim for the vitals and you wont be dissapointed!

 

180 gr. will drop a lot more specially at longer ranges.

Ernesto, I agree completely, I use 150 gr. and they work great. Good all around weight.

Even though the 168 grain bullets have the best ballistic coefficiency in a .30 caliber (I believe?), I have used 150 grains for deer out of my semi custom 06' for many years without any probelms, as long as you use a good bullet, you can't go wrong.

 

I have been using the Remington Premium ammo loaded with 150 grain accutips with excellent accuracy, even though they are pricey.

The bullet I pulled out of this years Coues deer I shot at 400 yards had great expansion and weight retention as I retrieved the bullet while I was skinning the deer, though I have heard these type bullets don't work as well at short ranges?

 

For elk I use the premium 180 grain Triple shock loads .

I don't shoot 30-06 but I would shoot a grain that shoots well out of your gun, even if it is a little overkill. If you go and shoot bigger game you can shoot the same load and not wory about changing loads. If I had a choice though, I would shoot what ever shoots the flatest.

30-06 SPRG 150 GR SST LIGHT MAG works well in my 30-06, shot a sub inch group at 100 yards and 7 inches at 600 yards. I shot my desert bighorn at 400 yards with this bullet last December. It's ballistics are similar to a 300 win mag. https://www.hornady.com/shop/?ps_session=5a...dbb152612e888c8

That is an 11% difference in initial velocity between the two, and the Light Mag did not kick the heck out of me either!!!

 

Then I went and bought a 7mm Rem mag, since the 7mm bullets are much better ballistically than the 30 cal, because they are longer and skinnier.

My -06 has a big time preference for hornady 165 gr btsp light mag .
