ya so the hunt didnt go as planned so far. went to the twin buttes and hunted the wilderness to try to get away from all the hunters. still a lot of hunters and not many elk. saw about 100 elk over the weekend with one good five the first day i passed on and a few smaller bulls, most were cows. now im hunting some lower country and going for anything with antlers. saw another five this evening but another hunter got him before i could. :(

Thats one of the toughest elk hunts i know of. youre gonna have to look waaaay back to find the bigger bulls. The cows are everywhere on this hunt but the bulls tuck themselves away in some nasty country. I had 6 bulls runnin together ( 4 were over 300 and 2 over 350) in that unit last year around this time and we cant find ANY of them this year :(

Best of luck on the hunt

My dad and little brother have the 2nd rifle hunt. We were out of Sunday glassing off the roads in areas we had seen bulls and apparently others had seen the same thing we had. I spoke to two hunters and they were working on getting a bull each out of the areas we scouted. Congrats to them but this sure makes a hard hunt harder. Based on the areas that I was glassing from and the amount of traffic I saw, it appears that the subsection of this unit may be too small for the number of tags. Either way, will be giving it heck.

Congrats to all that got one....We hope to join the group on Friday.

:( Yea this is one of GF great plans to create OPPORTUNITY.

I live here and will not put in for them.

With this many permits there will not be squat for Elk in this country.

He!!, the Forest Circus removed half of the trees that produce food

and left millons of DEAD bark beetle killed Ponderosas standing.

Good Luck to everyone hunting now and next week.

skyhawk, remember this is intended to be a meat hunt, don't pass on the first bull you see. Good luck, and congrats on your tag.

ya so i didnt get one this time. shouldnt have passed the 5x opening morning. had a good time hunting though. last day i messed up a stalk on a little rag 5 and that evening got on a little 3x that i let a buddy take. it was just as much fun letting him kill than if i did. been with another friend on this last hunt. put two down this evening, a little spike my buddy shot and his uncle also got one. its a tough hunt way to many tags and way to many elk getting taken. i think personal the G&F thinks more about managing the money than managing the game but thats just my two cents worth.
