What bullet for a 300 wsm

Getting ready to work up a reload for a 300 wsm. I want ONE bullet that will work for everything from Coues to elk. (Probabley want ever hunt elk with a rifle, so Coyote to Mule deer). At any rate, what bullet and what weight have you had the best luck with in 300 wsm?? Obviously I want the best penatrating bullet that flys the best. I shoot from 100 to 600 yards or more.

180 gr. Accubond

From my 300 WSM, I have used the 180 Accubond on 1 cow elk (complete penetration behind the shoulders), 1 mule deer (pass-through, bullet not recovered) and 2 Sitka Blacktails. 200 Accubond on 1 bull elk (found under hide on offside shoulder). Have used the 180 Scirocco on 1 mule deer (complete pass-through). Hope to use the 180 Nosler E-tip loaded for the HS 300WSM on an elk in the next week. Another 300 WSM (a Kimber for backup) has the 168 TTSX loaded.

 

I would try the 150 E-Tip, 150 Accubond, or 150 TTSX. Plenty for deer (and with 100% retention, good for elk). Would get less felt recoil also with the 150 over the 180, and less bullet drop at long range, but a little more wind drift. With the no-lead bullet requirements starting in other states, may not hurt to think ahead. Hornady will be releasing a copper guiding bullet called the GMX next year.

I bought a winchester model 70 in a 300wsm. The gun doesn't seem to like much. I tried loads with almost all the "good" bullets and ended up finding it likes 165 speer bt's. I got caught up in all the hype and was worried that speer was't good enough; but my dad reminded me how many sikta blacktails we have shot in the last thirty years in Alaska and alot of them were shot with speer or hornady's. Long story short, 186 yards, one shot high shoulder, and my three point dropped in it's tracks. Complete pass thru with no more damage than the Nosler Accubonds I shoot in my 300 win mag. I guess my point is use what ever the gun shoots best. A well placed shot will kill almost anything. 66gr IMR 4350, CCI 250
