TREESTANDMAN Report post Posted January 12, 2005 Due to the storms we have been having I haven't been able to hunt quite as much as I had hoped this january. The first weekend in January I was able to sit one of my treestands and I was fortunate enough to have a 100+ inch buck come in but unfortunately did not offer me a shot. Talk about a rush of adrenaline!!! The next time I was able to go out was wednesday after a huge snowstorm and I did not see one deer or elk that whole day. The next time I went out was monday the 10th. The weather was perfect. I watched a forky chase a doe 50 yds away or so. Then I had a loan doe come into my salt, she bedded down about 15 yds in front of me for about 20 minutes, then casually walked away from me into some thick oaks. About 15 minutes later I heard her whissle blow and she came running towards me at full speed. About 30 yds behind her was a very large coyote right on her tail. I didn't have enough time to bring my bow back but I doubt he got to her. That was a cool experience. About 20 minutes later I watched 4 does start walking towards me from a distance. I am praying that the 100+ buck is with them. I can make out a deer behind them through the brush but unfortuately it is a spike. The deer cautiously came in slowly until all 4 does are at the salt and the little buck is just kind of sniffing around. I had multiple opportunities to shoot him but I wanted to wait for Mr. Toad. After about 15 minutes it starts to snow. I'm thinking to myself, my wife is due in August and probably wont let me go out at all until next year, I've still got a pig tag to fill, I'm out of deer meat. I decided to take the spike. I will get the big boy next year.

Dodger2 Report post Posted January 13, 2005 Congrats on the deer and the new addition! I have my 2nd one coming in June. My first was born in September, the Monday after the opening weekend of archery elk, so I knew I won't be elk hunting that year.

More D Report post Posted January 13, 2005 I also had a yougnin about a year ago and while hunting is now harder it is sometimes more rewarding to stay at home and play with my little hunter. It's going to hard to wait 9 years to finally have my litter hunter along for the hunt. And on your spike, I will bet that he will one of if not your most memorable coues taken because you thought of your new little one and that is why you took "a spike" Good luck and have fun!
