Unit 30A

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I am new to the forum, but I must say that you are all a great source of info and help. I have been browsing around here for a couple of nights and find you all to be most helpful.

My brother lives in AZ and sent me a 30A (nov 28th) tag out of the blue, apparently it was an under subscribed unit... In reading the AZFG website and other information I am a little concerned about access, is this a problem? Any other info you can share about the unit without giving away your personal secret places? Seems the deer population might be a little spread out in this unit.

I spend the majority of my time in Utah and Colorado working, so unfortunatley my scouting will be done every night on the computer and phone until I get on the hill with my binos

Once again, thanks so much for all your information, this group really represents what is good about hunting and hunters.

Do a search for "cabezas" and that will get you to some past 30A threads. Limited access is a problem, as you noted from the AZGFD website. My first Coues came from Skeleton Canyon 20 years ago, but access is no longer. Good luck on your hunt. Hopefully someone with current info will PM you.

ok, maybe I should have said "my brother facilitated us getting tags from the Arizona Game and Fish...", at any rate I do appreciate the efforts of guys like you all that make it even possible for all of us to understand different species and techniques better.

I have hunted Utah, Colorado, Idaho, California, Wyoming, and many times in Texas if anyone needs to be pointed in the right direction. I may not know much, but I know many who do. Thanks again guys.

Good luck with finding a way in. I have a buddy who has hunted 30a for years who reported to me recently that he could only find one access point this year in the whole Dos Cabezas range. That's why they have leftover permits. I heard of some guys a few years ago who hired a local cropduster to put them in by helicopter and had a good hunt. Jack

Curmudgen,

You wouldn't happen to know who the crop duster was would you?

I'm sorry, but that was 8-10 years ago and I don't have a clue who it was or how to find out. My recollection is that it was someone in the Willcox area, but things have changed a lot since then. Jack

No it wasn't montie kenedy !! My fauther and I were flown in about 8 or 9 years ago by a guy by the name of fred smith. since then fred is no longer flying. access is nearly gone in the dos cabez so I would look at other areas in 30a if I were you.

If you dont mind me asking, about how much did that cost to have him fly you in?

Watch out for the Klumps - they claim to own property that has been disputed in the past and have even confronted the BLM. Other hunters have had bad experiences with them also. Seem like good ol boys but they don't trust anyone anymore - See this article
