Please tell the President-elect your thoughts on

Recommended Posts

Dear Mr. Obama,

I would like to congratulate you on your historic victory.

I would also like to say upfront, that I did not vote for either you or Mr. McCain. You see, I am one who believes in a strict reading of the Constitution, as it was written, with no implications. Neither you nor Mr. McCain seemed to follow that rule of thought, so I was forced to vote for another candidate.

Be that as it may, you are the President of the United States. A country founded on Christian beliefs, a strong work ethic and a no compromise approach to our national security and sovereignty

Please, as a citizen of this country, I ask you to uphold those values, protect them, and endorse them. There is no one article in the Constitution that needs redefining for a "modern" time. We do not need to water down the 1st Amendment for National security reasons or take powers away from our states and locals governments to decide "main street" issues on their own.

We live a representative republic. 50 individual states, each with their own values, morals and needs. Each with their own unique problems.

We should be striving to ungrip the powers of Washington on our communities and let each solve their problems on their own, with little intervention, but broad oversight, to insure that rights and freedoms guaranteed to us in the Constitution are not violated.

The main reason I did not vote for you was your voting record on the 2nd Amendment. You have shown no regard for common sense legislation, as you have commented on during your campaign. You have voted to ban, tax, and regulate a law abiding business into bankruptcy and turn law abiding, gun owning citizens into criminals. The founding fathers made it very clear as to the intention of the 2nd Amendment. Here is a quote from Benjamin Franklin on the importance of the right to self defense. “Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what is for lunch. Liberty is a well armed lamb, protesting the vote.”

I find it a little ironic that we can assume that the founders implied a right to privacy regarding our bodies, but if they write it down in plane English, right at the beginning of the document, that our Country was founded on, that “We the People…” have a right to not only own and carry firearms, but that right “shall not be infringed”, we have a problem trying to decipher the meaning. There is no deciphering needed. It is an individual right of American Citizens to own one firearm or 1,000.

It is governments job to insure that only law abiding citizens have weapons, I agree, but the Government should not be punishing or infringing on the rights of the 99% of people that own and use a firearm properly and lawfully.

Please, I ask that you not act hastily on your decisions regarding this and other guaranteed individual rights we all enjoy. If one our rights, such as the right to bear arms is infringed upon, who is to say that other rights, such as freedom of speech, protection against illegal search and seizure, etc won't be the next one attacked. Stand up for our Constitution, the way it is written. We have the amendment process, which we have used very successfully in the past, to change our Constitution when needed.

Thank you,

"My first priority will be to reinstate the assault weapons ban as soon as I take office. Within 90 days, we will go back after kitchen table dealers, and work to end the gun show and internet sales loopholes. In the first year, I intend to work with Congress on a national no carry law, 1 gun a month purchase limits, and bans on all semi-automatic guns."--Barack Obama, VPC Fund Raiser, 2007
