We found a gun on our Mulie hunt

Recommended Posts

We had the first Mule deer hunt, 10-31 to 11-6, in unit 32. We were hunting at the top of Sunset loop north of Wilcox in the National forest.

On the way back to camp we found a gun. We are trying to find the owner to get it back to its rightful owner. We also put up a flyer at the entrance of the national forest because we were camped right across the road from it but no one came to inqiure about it. We also stopped at most of the camps to ask if any one had lost a gun but no luck.

If any one know of someone who lost a gun please have them contact me via PM here to identify it.

I know I would be sick if I lost something like that.

Lets spred the word....

If you haven't already...you should turn the gun into your local police or sheriff. They can do a records check on the serial number. If the owner reported it lost already (to any law enforcement agency) the serial number was entered into a national date base computer. If you bring the gun in, they can check the serial number on the gun and do a records check. If it has been reported already, the check will indicate who the owner is. If the owner reports the gun missing in the future, the serial number is checked before it is entered into the computer. At that time the records check will indicate the gun was recovered already and which agency is storing it. But, what if the gun was originally stolen and the owner reported it as being stolen. Now, you are in possession of a stolen firearm and don't even know it. I would turn it in. Turning it in to the police or sheriff will probably be the fastest way for the owner to get it back. If need be the officer or deputy can track the serial number back to where the gun was purchased and who the original owner was.

On the contrary you can call and have them check the serial number. if it is not reported lost or stolen no need to turn it in. also a gun cannot be traced in the state of arizona by the Police department or state authorites back to purchaser and seller. They do not have a record of guns and owners in the state of arizona, nor registration.

The BATF (and their info is available to local law enforcers) knows exactly who has bought every new firearm. If a gun is sold a couple of times to individuals, it gets tougher to trace its ownership, but the feds been known to do so.

Correct. but local and state does not, many lawsuits have been brought up about it but as far as i am aware local and state agencies do not have access to those records.

The easiest way, and probably the only way is to go through your local police. Like I mentioned earlier, the firearm may be reported lost already. So, I would turn it in. When the police run the serial number, they will know. If already reported they can get it back to the owner. If not reported, they will hold it and hopefully the owner will make a police report. If they do not make a police report, eventually the BATF will identify the owner. The BATF will then contact the agency that is holding the gun and have them contact the owner. The BATF will not do anything unless it goes through the local guys.

The BATF won't do anything unless the local police believe it was used in a crime, and there is no reason to do so. So enjoy your pistol. It's better that someone gets some use out of it than for it to gather dust with a bunch of unclaimed and seized firearms until a bureaucrat decides it's time to destroy or auction all the stuff that's taking up space in his crowded storeroom.

I actually do not have the pistol anymore. Only a few hours after we found it the WM came to the camp next to ours, apparently they got into a bit of trouble because they were accidentally hunting on private property. When the investigator and the WM finished up 'next door' I called them over and showed them what we had found. I asked if they could take possetion of the pistol because I did not feel comfortable holding on to it. He said he would and put it into the AZGFD lost & found. He gave me his card and instructed that if the owner came around to contact him with a description so that it could be returned. I have his card and will give it to anyone who can identify the pistol.

It never occurred to any of us to keep what was not ours. I truly thought that the owner would come to camp before the hunt was over and that they might even get to take the pistol home with them. My guns have special place in my life and I hoped to get the pistol back to it's owner.

So please keep and ear out for the guy/gal telling a story about how they lost a pistol........

What are you doing hunting Mule deer?????

Mule deer are bigger, they have more meat. bigger horns, and they are just way more challenging and delicious than all these doggie sized Coues Deer that everyone seems to get so excited about.

Mule deer or "Carp Deer" dont even compare to hunting coues whitetail. id hunt coues any day of the week over Carp Deer!! mule deer are Challenging! haha it may only be harder to shoot a big carp deer bc they are to dumb to make it through in order to get big.
