More October success

Recommended Posts

Once again the October hunt started out with a bang for our camp this year! Arriving 3 days early this year to get some last minute scouting in, the bucks found on previous scouting trips were still in the usual areas. I myself had a nice 100" 3x3 picked out that had a blacktail, and my buddy Bob Copeland found a nice wide 3x3 he wanted.

The deer were following their usual patterns in the days before the hunt and cofidence was high! Opening morning found us all hiking into our usual glassing spots and getting set up at 0430, long before any other camps were stirring. Once there was enough light for glassing the hu nt was on! I found a few small bucks but the larger bucks had not come around the hill yet. A few minutes later Bob calls me on the radio he has his buck spotted and the one I want is with it. I told him to shoot the one he wanted because i would not be able to make it over to his location fast enough, and wanted him to get his deer. About 10 seconds later his shot rang out and his buck was down!

He called me once again to tell me my buck was still there and not moving so I took off in his direction. As I was getting there the buck went over the ridge. I was intent on this buck for the first 3 days of the hunt but was not able to locate him again.

The afternoon played out the same, small bucks and does but no shooters. As I was getting ready to head to camp I get a call From our very own azcouesandelk, Christian said he was done in 36c and wondered if we needed any help so I told him to come on down! H e pulled into camp that night with a Moutain Dew in one hand and a can of Chef Boy R dee in the other, he was ready to hunt!.... ;)

Saturday morning started out slow but the action picked up when we spotted a 100" buck out in the flats. We radioed my other buddy Larry Miller as he was set up closer to the buck. Larry had a young hunter with him looking for his first deer. We watched the beast bed down and talked them in close, but alas the buck managed to slip away unseen into the mesquites. SAturday evening went much better I assure you! We went to a different location to do some more glassing. About 430 Bobs son Justin spotted a buck as it was about to bed down. We got the spotter on it and Christian estimated it to be abouy an 80" buck. The stalk was on! We ranged the buck at 443 yards from where we were So Justin and Christian bailed off the ridge trying to get closer. After about 30 minutes they headed back to our location. I asked Justin If he would like to shoot the buck from there and he said if he could he would. So I offered him my 300 Ultra Mag. Which he jumped at! We got him set up on the bi-pod and back packs for a rest which was dead solid. Turned the Swarovski scope up to 18 and he had a perfect view of the bedded buck. Now keep in mind Justin always uses his trusty .270 and has shot all his deer at or under 200 yards. He has never even fired my rifle until this day. His first shot was a hair low but the buck never moved. His second shot drilled the deer in his bed and rolled him right out of it! The coolest thing was watching the vapor trails as the bullets went streaking toward the buck! Needless to say the ridge was filled with high fives!
