Kevin Report post Posted January 5, 2005 Jason and Tommy, The news is making it sound like ya'll are about to wash away. My wife is concerned that I might not get to go (fat chance!). How serious is the flooding on the Mimbres? Did any of the country get snow or just rain? And while I've got your attention, what is the rut up to for both Mule and coues deer? Good luck to both of you. Kevin
jamaro Report post Posted January 5, 2005 Well it did rain all of Monday and Tues.. it snowed in town last night but for the most part it is melted.... They closed the West Fork and some of the Gila Monument area... The "little" creek in santa clara was raging last night.. here is a little news snippet.. http://www.scsun-news.com/artman/publish/article_3470.shtml Here is what the weather channel says... http://www.weather.com/activities/other/ot...?locid=USNM0205 It looks like it is going to start to clear... We saw some muley bucks starting to rut a few weeks ago... Also, here at Fort Bayard all of the coues does on the hospital grounds have bucks with them.... None of the bruisers have shown up... I think we are going to hit it just right... I could totally be wrong but I have hope. Are you going to do spot and stalk or sitting? How long are you going to be in the mountains? Did you draw for Stink Pigs? Good Luck Jason
crazyaboutcoues Report post Posted January 5, 2005 Kevin....the muledeer rut is at it's tail end, but the big boys are definetly with the does, so it should be fun Coues deer rut has just begun for us...I have the Privilege to work at the copper mine right next to the burro mts...so I just happen to keep an eye on the local couesys . Last week the coues does were still lonley...this week I have seen small bucks close to the does. I've heard that the mimbres area got alot of rain....most of the creeks are going to be running. Hope you have 4 wheel drive. The roads to Wall lake are going to be either snowpacked or very sloppy from the mud. You should be ok though, depending on how far up your going. Where are you going to be camped? Maybe I can get more specific info for you. J- and I are ready to hit the wilderness, should be awsome with the snow we got last night. But it's going to be cold
Kevin Report post Posted January 5, 2005 Thanks for the info guys. I'll be hunting unit 16 for the entire hunt. I haven't had much time to scout for coues so I may hunt mulies. I'll probably camp near lake Roberts so I can get out if the weather gets too bad, besides I'll be by myself and my wife likes me to call occassionally to check in. I'll hunt towards the River from Hiway 15. Seems to me there ought to be some Coues deer in some of that rougher country but I'll not be picky. I think as long as I get away from the highway I'll avoid the crowd and shoud be able to find some deer. Any other suggestions? Kevin PS Jason, no, my opinion of Javelina is about the same as Larks! CHD Report post Posted January 6, 2005 Sure don't mean to hijack this thread, but your posts bring back memories of my childhood 30 years ago. My grandparents lived in T or C their entire lives (it used to be called Hot Springs, NM), and I still have family all over that country. Spent half my childhood in T or C and Deming (where my great aunt/uncle lived). Some still ranch @ Dusty on the west slope of the San Mateos (Sullivans). Been to Wall Lake (with lots of skunks!) and even fished Lake Roberts with my Grandad. My Grandad grew up a cowboy at Old Horse Springs. My mom grew up in T or C and went to college @ NMSU in Cruces. I tagged along in 1972 with my Grandpa when he worked fire patrol for the USFS in the Black Range that summer. Sure wish I could do that again. Life was much simpler back then. I whacked my first decent muley on the White Sands Missile Range (San Andreas) in the early '70's. I was 11. I took a better one 2 years later in the Oscura area of the missile range. I turned down a decent job offer in Silver City 3 years ago. I looked at it REALLY hard. At any rate, thanks for taking me back to some pleasant times tonite you Southern NM boys, even if it was inadvertantly. I grew up in Los Lunas, which sure ain't pleasant memories. Take care. Good luck on your hunt Kevin...try checking out Military road up by the cliff dwellings. That used to be one of my old haunts when i hunted muleys.

fatfootdoc Report post Posted January 11, 2005 SO the silence is ominous!! Did you guys connect this weekend or what? AG
crazyaboutcoues Report post Posted January 11, 2005 It's been rough....I haven't seen a coues deer yet, I think the muleys pushed them out of the country . Seen 13 muledeer bucks...three I could have taken, but still waiting for the gray ghost to appear . I did witness something kinda cool... two huge muleys brawl something fierce...if there would have been a shot opportunity at the big four point i would have taken it. We're headed back tomorrow night for the last part of the hunt. It's suppose to snow tonight
fatfootdoc Report post Posted January 11, 2005 I was supposed to go out Wed. after work, but have to go to ABQ to take the wife to the Doc. hopefully I will be back for Fri and Sat. I would at least like to get out and see some deer. Good luck to you! AG
Kevin Report post Posted January 11, 2005 I hunted Saturday afternoon and Sunday with little success. I saw a very nice mule deer fork horn (20" wide 24" tall) but couldn't put eye gaurds on him for the life of me. Then I managed to bang my left knee up a little and have called it a hunt. It sucks to get old! Kevin
jamaro Report post Posted January 12, 2005 Lets see.. I have seen deer everyday.... I am pretty much hunting anything with big horns... My coues deer saddle is pretty slow.. It does not look like anything has cross the saddle in a long time.... So I ended up chasing muleys in the rolling hills... I found a 160 class muley that I am going to try to stick... he is 26 wide.. Pretty tall and has deep forks... I have been on him once but each time he bobs when I weave... I was within 35 yards of him and his does and Sat. I followed his does all day of Sun., I never saw him on Sun... Monday I let him rest... I am going to spend the rest of the hunt trying to catch up to him. It has been crazy warm so I think it has really slowed things down. jason
fatfootdoc Report post Posted January 12, 2005 Jason, I hope that deer has a run in with your dart! Post some pics after you stick him! Kevin, Sorry to hear about your shortened hunt but at least you did not get washed away. Get that knee ready for next year!! take care guys AG
