Son's first deer!!

Recommended Posts

I have been so busy with hunts lately that I have not had time to post this but my boy has been after me to do it. His name is Braden and he drew his first deer tag this year, a juniors hunt in 27. Here is his story. We started out pretty low and were into deer in twenty minutes or so of the first morning. I had found four mule deer bucks and was trying to show him where they were. It was one of those situations where I could see them but he could not find them. When he finally located them, there was only one left but he was not moving. There was a fence in front of us and i rested him on it. Just about the time he found it in the scope, he walked away. We had some close calls similar to that one in the next couple of days and saw lots of deer. I wanted to stay the whole hunt but knew with my hunt in 2 weeks and my wifes in 3 that I should get some work done before I don't have a job. So, on Monday afternoon after hunting low for 3 and a half days I decided to move up to a spot that a good friend had told me about. I knew it was a gamble at this point but we were ready. Sometimes things just work out after you have hunted hard. We were driving in to a mountain that we were going to hunt, there was a fairly open ridge in front of us that could be seen pretty well. Something caught my eye high on the ridge to our left. I stopped and looked through the glasses to see deer. I knew that there were at least two bucks and some does. We hurried up the road to where it curved to the right that would put us way to the right of the deer feeding down the ridge. We got our stuff together and headed up the ridge, it was pretty steep but everytime I looked behind me he was right there. I reach about the half way point of the ridge, picked a spot for him to shoot from and waited for them to feed our way. Remember when I said sometimes things just work out? Well it was not more than 20 minutes when I caught movement up and to my left. I pulled the glasses up and they were still feeding our way. I told Braden that they were coming and that the second buck was the 2 point. He got on his rest and waited.. 2 does fed across an opening about 80 yards uphill, then a spike, then the 2 point. I whispered to him to take a deep breath and shoot him. I knew he was shaking like a leaf, but he got it together and took the shot. It was uphill and he may have shot a little high, but he got one lung and somehow came out the spine and he dropped in his tracks. I don't think that he had a tear, just a huge smile, but I dam sure had a tear. I hugged him, told him congrats and nice job and we went to check him out. This was his first deer tag and first buck and I could not be more proud of the job he did.
